2000 The Tutor

During my senior year in high school, I also completed my freshman year in college! I also began as a tutor in the math lab of San Jacinto Community College.

After high school graduation, I proudly took my 3.8 GPA to Texas Tech.

After high school graduation, I too proudly took my 3.8 GPA to Texas Tech. High atop the Llano Estacado I studied chemical engineering, computer science, journalism, linguistics, asian cultures, and ultimately earning my B.A. in Philosophy six months ahead of schedule!

I also started a small family, took on three jobs and didn't sleep for four days a week.

My favorite job was tutoring English to students from around the world. It was painstaking, frustrating, fun, and always rewarding.

2003 Administrator

Returning to Houston I found a position with a small family company that sold bicycles to chemical companies. Reporting directly to the owner of the company I became a jack-ofall-trades, completing whatever task needed attention such as: Inventory Accounting IT Internal Audits Employee Relations Initiative Implementation and Review Training Public Relations Delivery Driver

I enjoyed the challenge and continuous variability of the job, but something was missing...

I wasn't really helping people, I wasn't making a contribution to society.

2007 Teacher

I was the sixth professional hired for the position of Social Studies Instructor at Texas Serenity Academy that academic year. Despite the monicker of Mr. Two Weeks among staff and students, I was the last they would need to hire.

A charter school, it grew from a residential treatment center, and by default operated with a population that was culturally poor, despondent with education, scared, and angry.

It was necessary to redefine success, teaching an 8th grader phonetics, there were no easy days with more fights than class periods, and the presence of drugs prescribed and illegal permeated the campus. I had never felt so overwhelmed or accomplished.

After seven years I am the second longest tenured teacher. In that time I have created the technology program from scratch, taught adult classes in the evening, founded the first academic club, held the ancillary lead teacher position, and worked closely with the principal to achieve a campus vision.

Pictured here are 3rd grade students practicing iconic programming.

Accomplishing much, I began to feel I had created a system another talented professional could continue. As my sense of purpose grew, so did my family.

2012 Protege

From 2012 2014 I began to work even more closely with the schools Superintendent, Human Administrator, and Principal to recast the schools culture. I also enrolled at the University of St. Thomas pursuing my Masters of Education in Educational Leadership, joining an honor fraternity for earning a 4.0.

Texas Serenity Academy has all the advantages and disadvantages of a small, cozy home. The people are like family, but there is no room for growth.
