Lillie Weidner Sam 9/9/10 March 4th and March 6th Social Emotional ISTAR KR: Sense of Self

and Others

Sam has reached level 3, meaning he demonstrates independence and engages cooperatively with other children and teachers. This picture shows Sam waiting for a friend to make it down the slide before he took his turn. Goal: Demonstrates respect for self and others. Sam struggles with appropriately touching his friends. He should continue to develop his perception of others and knowing when they are uncomfortable or do not like what he is doing.

ISTAR KR: Manage Emotions

Sam shows a level 3 in development of this section. This picture shows Sam positively reacting to redirection. Previously, he had been grabbing his friends on their shoulders. A teacher noticed the pattern of this behavior and handed him a cardboard steering wheel to drive to his pretend destination. Goal: Uses Strategies to manage emotions. Sam needs to work on using his words and problem solving strategies to resolve his problems.

ISTAR KR: Interpersonal Skills

Sam is engaging in a type of dramatic play in the kitchen area (level 4). The triangle classroom was having a group meal and bringing chairs to the oven area. Sam participated by helping to bring chairs over and distributing food. Goal: Interacts with others positively. There are occasions that Sams intentions with play interfere with positive interactions with his friends. He should remember that his friends have feelings and intentions with their own play.

ISTAR KR: Responsibility

Sam has reached level 3 in responsibility. He is able to follow rules and the classroom routine. This picture shows Sam playing with the discovery table. He followed familiar rules by reminding his friends that the cotton balls stayed in the discovery table and did not belong in the rest of the classroom. Goal: Applies rules to situations. Sam is aware of most of the rules. However, he sometimes chooses not to follow the rules when he thinks he can get away with it. He should remember that rules are there for a reason.

ISTAR KR: Problem Solving

Sam demonstrates a level 3 of development in this section. He is able to use trial and error, ask for help and develop reasons. These two pictures show Sam solving his problem of not getting enough paint. He wanted to paint more so he picked up two or paintbrushes. Goal: Finds alternative strategies and solutions. Sam should continue to develop the skill of predictions and various approaches.

ISTAR KR: Approaches to Learning

Sam has reached level 4 in Approaches to Learning. He has an interest in things he does not know and will respectively listen to his teachers. This picture is an extenuation of a previous developmental concept. After being redirected from an undesired behavior, Sam used his steering wheel to drive to Ohio. He asked his teacher to get on the climber so they could go to the farm as well. Goal: Varies from a model. Through working with Sam, it has become apparent that he follows what is expected in both play and art. He should utilize his own individuality and show that in his play.
