Movement Activities in Curriculum


Math Activity- Multiplication Tag Description- Have students play tag. Once a student has been tagged they must get down on one knee and hold up numbers using both of their hands. In order to be freed and able to run again, another student must multiply the numbers displayed by the tagged student. For example, if the tagged student held up a 3 on one hand and a 2 on the other, the classmate would have to say 6 in order to free them. Goal- To enable the student to practice their multiplication tables while encouraging physical activity Grade Level- 3rd grade and up Activity- Jumping Jacks Math Description- The teacher states an addition, subtraction, or multiplication problem. The students verbally answer the problem and whatever the answer is determines how many jumping jacks they will do. For example, the teacher says 3 + 3 and the students say 6. After the answer is announced, the students begin doing 6 jumping jacks. Goal- To enable the students to work on the math skills while encouraging physical activity Grade Level- 3rd grade and up Activity- Mathematical Ball Toss Description- The teacher writes a problem on the board. The students, with a partner, will answer the math problem and toss a ball to one another the correct number of times. For example, if the problem is 7 + 2, the students will toss the ball to one another 9 times. Goal- To enable the students to work on hand-eye coordination while also practicing math skills Grade Level- Kindergarten and up Social Studies Activity- Tribe Challenge Description- The teacher groups the students into 4 teams. The students are part of a tribe. Each team is placed in a corner of the room. The purpose of the game is for the team members to collect items for their tribe that are placed in the center of the room. On the teachers command, one student from each group is to run into the center of the room and grab an item. In order to do this, they must first know what kind of item belongs to their tribe.

Goal- This game enables the students to learn and retain information about different tribes while engaging in physical activity Grade Level- 5th grade and up Activity- Traffic Light Game Description- After discussing different modes of transportation used throughout history, allow the students to practice the purpose of the red, yellow, and green lights. This can be done by holding up colored paper. For example, if the teacher holds up the green paper, the students proceed forward. The yellow paper slows them down, and the red informs them to stop. Goal- This activity enables the students to learn about the traffic light and how it is used for transportation purposes while allowing them to engage in physical activity Grade Level- Kindergarten and up Activity- Occupation Activity Description- After discussing different occupations that require physical labor, write down various job titles on index cards. Group the students into teams and allow them to act out the job title, while the other students guess what it is. An example of this may be a Lumberjack. Goal- This activity enables the students to learn about various physical labor jobs that were important in history and act them out through physical activities Grade- 3rd grade and up Science Activity- Recycle Game Description- The students will first partner up. They will then transport crumbled up paper and plastic bottles into the correct recycle bin using the toy body parts that the teacher says aloud. For example, the teacher says elbow and forehead. This means that the two students must work together to transport the recyclable into the bin using an elbow and a forehead. Goal- The goal of this activity is to encourage recycling while working on physical fitness skills Grade- Kindergarten and up Activity- Plant Tag Description- The students begin this activity by playing tag. Once a student gets tagged they must report to the teacher and receive an index card. On the index card a part of a plant is displayed. The student must state the part of the plant that is displayed in order to return to the game. Goal- The goal is for the students to learn all of the parts of a plant while encouraging physical activity Grade- 5th grade and up Activity- Scavenger Hunt

Description- The students will be given a list of nature items to find outside. The students are to walk around and find each of the items listed. Once the item is found, it can be crossed off of their list. Goal- This activity enables the students to become aware of their surroundings and learn more about nature, while also incorporating walking into the lesson Grade- 3rd grade and up Reading/Language Arts Activity- Jumping Words Description- The students must first partner up. They are to take turns saying their spelling words to their partner. The other student is expected to spell out the spelling word while jumping. To make it more challenging, the teacher could say jump on your right foot, jump on your left foot, etc. Goal- The purpose of the activity is to allow the students to practice their spelling words while engaging in physical activity Grade- 1st grade and up Activity- Spell Ball Description- The students are to first form a circle around the room. The teacher will state a spelling word and the student holding the ball must spell the word and then pass the ball to another classmate. If you are given the ball, you are expected to spell the next word. Goal- The purpose of the activity is to allow the students to practice their spelling words while engaging in physical activity Grade- 1st grade and up ActivityDescription- After the class has read the book titled Muscles in the Body, they are to act out a physical activity that exercises the specific muscle stated by the teacher. Goal- This allows the students to practice their reading and comprehension skills by acting out a physical activity Grade- 3rd grade and up
