Suzanne Jacobs HUMA 2400 April 27, 2014 Media Review Over the years, the Pledge of Allegiance has received its fair share attention in the light of religious debate. Many groups of people have taken a swing in attempts to get it out of the school system or to void the two words that produce the debate. Most recent of these debates is a conflict going on in the state of New Jersey. According to an article posted by Fox New, Family sues N.J. School District Over Pledge of Allegiance, a couple fromt the state of New Jersey is seeking to remover the a law that requires teachers of the district to lead its students in the reciting of the pledge. The case does not go after the first amendment, as previous attempts have failed. Instead it states that the wording of the pledge, mainly under God, is discriminatory toward atheist or members of a polytheist people. In other words, it leaves children vulnerable to attacks and ridicule from the majority group of children. Whether the article was objective or not is somewhat interesting. Many written articles on this subject produced by the media hold back on being too subjective, including the one I have just described. On the other hand, most of the video generated media tends to be more bias. This is true even if the same organization has produced a non bias story via text. Although I cannot speak for all organizations, the few that I have looked into followed the trend, especially Fox News. Personally, I sympathise with more conservative members of the issue. I understand why a Right sided agenda would defend their beliefs on such a touchy subject. Much in the same way that I have a difficult time disposing of Christian based pamphlets, books, or any text whether or

not I am affiliated to the particular faith that generated the material. Requesting to omit that pledge from public schools would be a strike on their persons faith. On the other hand, I understand that those two particular words were added in 1954 and long after it was originated. In my opinion the words were added to counter communism and strengthen the United States already monotheistic faith based nature. My time in this class has helped me better understand the people that surround me on a day to day basis. I know that there are many different viewpoints on the same subjects. That issues on these types of topics have the tendency to lean towards that of the greater belief. Eventually though the people of this nation act appropriately and swing towards, rather than against its foundation. In this topic, the addition of under God, was added to the Constitution a time that may have seemed appropriate, but I believe the best resolution is simply to bring the Pledge back to its original state, and that eventually it will.
