This project is for my Math 1040 class, Statistics.

We were assigned to choose from three populations; baseball, body measurements, and exhalation. I decided to choose body measurements because I thought it would be interesting. We were asked to choose a categorical variable for the first part and a quantitative variable for the second part. With this information we will analyze data from the variables and use different statistical methods to analyze the data.

Despite few differences between the graphs the population data (above) and the sample data (below) are fairly the same. However, there are some distinguishable differences between the population data and the sample data. For example, in the population data females took up 51.28% whereas in the sample data males had 55.56%. To get my first sample (sample 1) I did a simple random sample. To do this I googled random number generator. I clicked in the first link (http://www.random.org/). Then I entered my number range in this case it would be 1 through 307, after I simply clicked generate and it gave me a random number. With the number I got I went to my categorical data found the

number on the side then I wrote the number that was in the side. I did this until I got my sample size of 50. As for my second sample (sample 2) I used the same number generator to get a random number for my seed and then counted every 10th number until I got my sample size of 50.

The following graphs and information is from my quantitative data. Quantitative data is information that is numerically significant.

Summary statistics: Waist Girth Colum n Waist Girth n 50 7 Mean 76.97948 7 Varianc e 121.279 3 Std. dev. 11.01268 8 Std. err. 0.4890906 5 Media n 75.8 Rang e 55.3 Mi n 57. 9 Max 113. 2 Q 1 68 Q3 84. 5

The population graphs are similar to the sample graphs in that they are all skewed right. There are some differences but they are not visibly noticeable.

The next information will be about Confidence Levels. Confidence level is the probability 1 to infinity that the confidence interval actually contain the population parameter. Here is the Confidence interval for the population proportion from each of my samples of the categorical variable.

Here is the confidence intervals for the population mean of my quantitative samples using a 95% confidence level.

Finally here is the confidence intervals for the population standard deviation using a 95% confidence level.

In all of my confidence intervals, they did capture the population parameters of each.

The Following information is about Hypothesis Testing. Hypothesis refers to a claim about a property of a population. Therefore hypothesis testing is a procedure for testing a claim about the property of the population. Using alpha as 0.05, here is a hypothesis test for the population proportion of my categorical variable.

Both of these hypothesis tests have a type 1 error, which is making the mistake of rejecting the null hypothesis when it is actually correct.

Here is the hypothesis test for my population mean of the quantitative data.

This hypothesis test has a type 1 error, which is rejecting the null hypothesis when it was actually correct. My samples meet the condition to perform these tests because the sample size is greater than 35.

Conducting this experiment was fun. There were some times that it was a lot of work. For example getting my samples was easy but took a lot of time. Maybe it would have been easier with a group, but I still managed to do it. I am grateful I took this class and completed this project because I never realized that stats is used in almost all of my classes. When it came to talking about some stat topic in my other classes I knew what was going on. Since I am majoring in Psychology, stats will come in very handy. Most of the work that psychologist do is conduct experiments and work with statistics. The project also helped me develop my problem solving skills by basically thinking about things in depth. There is always more to something then what we originally believe. After dong this experiment, I thought about all the work statisticians have to go through. For this experiment I was given the information, however statisticians have to get all their information using various methods. After that they have to begin conducting their experiment, and in some cases they might not have all the information they might need. Overall this was fun experiment that required a good effort. I enjoyed doing it, this information will be very useful in my future.
