I completed a paired teaching with a lesson about adjectives with 2nd graders at Westview Elementary School in Platteville, Wisconsin. This lesson plan contains a general description of the lesson, information about students learning needs, teaching standards, objectives, procedures, and assessments of the students. Wisconsin Teaching Standard Alignment This artifact aligns with Wisconsin Teaching Standard 10: The teacher fosters relationships with school colleagues, parents, and agencies in the larger community to support pupil learning and well-being and acts with integrity, fairness and in an ethical manner. This artifact aligns best with Standard 10 because I have acquired the experience of working with a colleague to complete a paired lesson plan and teaching it to small groups of students. An example of my understanding of how to connect with other teachers and fostering that relationship with them and the students was the paired lesson a colleague and I did with small groups of 2nd graders at Westview Elementary School. For this lesson, we had to teach adjectives to different groups of students by creating a lesson of how we were going to teach this particular lesson. The way my colleague and I approached this lesson was to divide the work load of creating the lesson plan so that we were both on the same level of knowing what to teach in order to support what the students were already learning about adjectives. For our lesson, we decided to use a toy car as a manipulative and the students had to use adjectives to describe the car (color, size, shape, etc.). For example, we would have the students tell the different colors on the car, the shape of the tires and windows, or even the size of the car. During this exercise, my colleague and I would feed information and ideas off each other in order to support the students learning and showed fairness among the students so we did not focus just on one student but all students. The second part of the lesson was more of an assessment to see what the students understood of what we just taught about adjectives. For this, we had the students write a short story using a list of adjectives that my colleague and I wrote up for them to use. After they finished their stories, my colleague and I had to give each of the students a time limit on their story sharing to see if they understood the content and to match the objectives we had set for the lesson. Artifact Reflection adjectives were from the results of the activities and my colleague and I realized that we successfully completed an engaging lesson by working together and creating that positive work relationship. After this lesson, students will be able to learn more about adjectives with the help of their peers and parents through practice and using items in their living environment. Using manipulatives in the community like road signs, advertisements, and other agency names will also help support a higher level of learning of adjectives and vocabulary by broadening their understanding of what is considered an adjective. With this experience, I have gained more skill in this standard because this experience has taught me how to work with other teachers and support students academic learning at the same time. Having this ability allows me to work successfully with other teachers in a classroom environment and be able to show support to students with fairness and integrity when it comes to comparison of their individual work. Contributes to the School and District The candidate is able to assume a leadership role among colleagues and is supportive and cooperative with peers and volunteers, and serves as a participant and leader in school events and school and district projects. This artifact addresses SD4.d. because it allowed me to explore my understanding of how to work together successfully with another teacher and share that leadership role by collaborating with small groups of students. This paired teaching experience was a great way for me to participate and serve as a leader in a local school because it allowed me to take charge of the lesson in a confident and productive manner. I also had to show leadership by being supportive of my colleagues ideas about the students learning and support the students ideas as well. The lesson was also a great way to contribute my experience and past knowledge about a particular subject to a local school and its students. After this experience, I have gained a higher level of competency because I had the chance to learn how to work as a leader among my colleague to create learning experience and be supportive of the ideas and the knowledge my colleague had to share. Artifact Reflection Reflection What I learned about teaching/learning from this experience: From this experience, I have learned how to work with other teachers to create and teach an effective lesson plan in a supportive and ethical manner. I have learned that with paired teaching, you need to have a positive relationship with other teachers and be supportive of each others ideas and methods in order to create a lesson that is effective and fun for the students. With this lesson plan, my colleague and I learned how to create achievable objectives, collaboration of ideas, and informal assessment. This experience has also taught me how to show contribution to local schools and how to take on that leadership role when working with other teachers and students. What I learned about myself as a prospective educator as a result of this experience: As a result of this experience, I have learned that collaboration with other teachers can be beneficial in teaching because it helps give the lesson a different perspective of ideas, objectives, and student learning I have also learned that paired teaching shows the students what teamwork and cooperation looks like in the classroom. As a prospective educator, it is important to know other teachers and have that positive relationship with them so you can be supportive of each other and create a healthy learning environment.
