swright@westshore.edu (231)843-5983 Description: Allied Health Technology is class offered through West Shore ESDs career tech center that prepares high school juniors and seniors for careers in health care. Students receive hands-on experience in a skills lab as well as clinical experience in area nursing homes and job shadowing in various health care settings. Students can earn up to 13 college credits and are eligible for nurse aide certification upon completion of the course.

As a volunteer in the Allied Health Technology class I helped to grade tests and quizzes, led activities, helped complete skill check-offs, and answered any questions students had about nursing school and Ferris.

Jean Watsons Theory of Human Caring

o Caring can be effectively demonstrated and practiced only interpersonally o Caring consists of carative factors that result in the satisfaction of certain human needs o Effective caring promotes health and individual or family growth o Caring responses accept the patient as he or she is now, as well as what he or she may become o A caring environment is one that offers the development of potential while allowing the patient to choose the best action for him or herself at a given point in time o A science of caring is complementary to the science of curing o The practice of caring is central to nursing

o Other local career tech centers with similar programs include: Kent Career Technical Center, Muskegon Area Career Tech Center, WexfordMissaukee Career Technical Center, & MecostaOsceola Math/Science/Technology Center. o This service learning project would be beneficial to students who hope to eventually have a nurse education role. o Volunteer hours are only available during the school year.

Application
o The same caring technique that fosters better healing in the health care environment also fosters better learning in the classroom. o Health care instructors should develop a relationship with students and create a positive learning environment in order to promote optimal learning.
