Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting in Botswana
The Minister for Justice Michael Keenan will travel to Botswana from this week to attend the
18
th
Commonwealth Law Ministers Meeting (CLMM) on behalf of the Attorney-General.
The theme for this years meeting is Consolidating the Rule of Law and Human Rights in the
Commonwealth. The meeting will focus on strengthening democratic institutions underpinned
by the rule of law and the protection of human rights throughout the Commonwealth.
Commonwealth Law Ministers will discuss current law and justice issues of common concern
including counter-terrorism, cybercrime, human rights and access to justice.
This forum will provide an important opportunity for Australia to continue to share
information and best practice as a leader on legal policy and practice within the
Commonwealth, Mr Keenan said.
This peak triennial meeting is the only high-level event to bring together Law Officers and
Senior Officials from more than 50 nations across the Commonwealth to discuss and resolve
national, regional and global issues.
During the event I also plan to take the opportunity to attend a range of bilateral meetings
with Canada, Malaysia, New Zealand, Singapore and the United Kingdom, Mr Keenan said.
