ABSTRACT
Determining the tensile, compressive
and impact strength of cross stitched
and un-stitched fiber glass-epoxy
laminates
The composite material was fabricated
by the hand lay technique.
The specimen according to ASTM
dimension were made and it is
unstitched at the initial stage and then
the tensile, compressive and impact
strength of it are noted.

To the same dimension using the
cotton yarn the another specimen is
cross stitched and then the tensile,
compressive and impact strength of
the specimen has to be found.
The comparison of behaviour
between the stitched and the
unstitched composite material is to
be studied.
The specimen is made by hand lay
technique
The manufacturing process involves
laying a stack of plies consisting of
nominally in plane fibers is penetrated
and bounded together by needle and
bobbin threads.
The stitching was done by using cotton
yarn.
MANUFACTURING METHOD
The laminates were manufactured at
room temperature.
The laminated fabricated were of
300mm X 300 mm and of thickness
2.4mm.
The stitching is made at an angle of 45
degrees and the volume fraction of stitch
threads material was about 0.3%.
Tensile, Compressive and Impact test
were made on Universal Testing
Machine.
STITCHED GLASS FIBRE
UNSTITCHED GLASS FIBRE
ADVANTAGES
Composite materials are extremely
strong especially per unit of weight.
The tailor composites were used for
design flexibility.
It is highly resistant to chemical and
never rust or corrode.
It has excellent elastic properties.
It increases the stiffness of the material.

APPLICATIONS
It is used in the field of military for
making body armor, thus the soldiers
are well protected from blast and
ballistic threats.
Boats are made with fiber glass thus it
can stay highly in the corrosive salt
water, without rusting.
It is used in car leaf springs due to its
elastic properties.
