Due to the limited availability of quantitative and qualitative specialized scientific glossaries in the field of
Desert Locust, the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region (CRC) realized the
necessity of issuing an inclusive simplified glossary. The glossary includes 3286 scientific and technical
terms that are commonly used in the field of locust and grasshoppers together with their corresponding
meanings and detailed explanations in English and Arabic in order to gratify the urgent need of
professionals involved in both applied and research fields.
The concepts are accessible online through the Desert Locust Web site at:
http://termportal.fao.org/FAODL with the objective of maintaining the collection through time, with
additions and amendments to the concepts as they evolve in FAO's work.

Desert Locust is considered to be one of the most dangerous pests that threaten crop production and food
security. It might be the oldest registered pest for its danger and great ability to live and breed under various
ecological and climatic regimes in vast areas covering 29 million square kilometres, extending from the
Atlantic Ocean in the west to India and Pakistan in the east, and comprising the whole area or parts of 64
countries.
Since Desert Locust is one of the pests that has a capacity to fly long distances and migrate very fast, it is
considered to be an international pest that neither a single nor a number of countries are able to control
without the collaboration of all concerned. Consequently, it was viewed that the Desert Locust breeding
areas should be divided into three major regions: Eastern, Central and Western regions, so that survey and
control is blocked within each region and does not spread to the other regions. The Food and Agriculture
Organization of the United Nations (FAO) has taken the responsibility of coordinating the Desert Locust
management in these three regions, in addition to encouraging further studies and research in the field of
Desert Locust management, which will prevent future locust occurrence and invasions.
In view of the wide-range of terms and local expressions, of the limited availability of specialized scientific
locust glossaries and of the rapid scientific and technological developments, it was felt necessary to issue an
inclusive, simplified and clear glossary in three languages: Arabic, English and French. This glossary
includes scientific and technical terms, expressions and idioms that are commonly and frequently used in the
field of locust and grasshoppers; and it meets the urgent need of professionals and all other concerned in
both applied and research activities in the three regions.
In this respect, the working paper on preparing and producing an encyclopaedic glossary was presented and
endorsed by the 24th Session of FAO Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region
(CRC) in April 2004 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It was agreed by the Commission that the draft of both English
and Arabic versions, after being prepared by an expert, would be circulated to all concerned such as
universities, research centres and scientific institutes in order to gather views and comments.
Consequently, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations selected one of the eminent
experts in the Central Region, Professor Mahmoud Fahmy Harb, from the Plant Protection Research Institute
in Egypt. He was the consultant who took over this task, in view of his deep knowledge and extensive
scientific and practical experience in the field. Initially, he devoted himself to preparing the glossary in
English by compiling most of the English expressions, terms and scientific idioms which are relevant to locust
field and allied sciences and presenting their meanings and explanations, utilizing each and every available
resource.
After circulation of the English draft of the glossary, the feedback was inserted in the English final version
and the Arabic draft was prepared, in which, the consultant not only presented the corresponding Arabic
meaning, word by word, but also added more meanings and explanations whenever necessary, as there are
different dialects in the Arabic speaking countries.
The Arabic version of the glossary was also widely circulated for comments and views, and subsequently, it
was dispatched to the FAO Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Western Region in order to
be prepared into French.
In this regard, we would like to express our sincere appreciation and deep gratitude to Professor Mahmoud
Fahmy Harb, for his acknowledged hard work and time spent over three years in preparing this glossary
which contains more than three thousand concepts. We also wish to thank our colleagues who participated
in the completion of the glossary by sending us their suggestions and comments. A special thanks goes also
to Dr. Munir Butrous, Secretary of the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region,
for his endeavours and time given to valuable discussions, suggestions, technical and scientific advices
during the course of this work, and for revising the final versions of the English/English and English/Arabic
glossaries.
We welcome everyone who will take advantage of this glossary and also who would like to develop this work
further by adding or amending any entries.
Dr. Mohamed Ibrahim Albraithen,Assistant
Director-General for the Office of the United Nations in the Near East
iv
Desert Locust is no longer a science with a limited number of expressions, since it has evolved into an
important far-reaching field of knowledge that includes several sciences with numerous branches, containing
a considerable number of scientific, technical and specialized foreign terms. As a result of the daily scientific
and technological developments and the worldwide information revolution, accompanied by a regular flow of
newly created terms that affect all life aspects, particularly the agricultural field, a reaction was necessary
also in the field of Desert Locust.
In view of the above and due to the limited availability of quantitative and qualitative specialized scientific
glossaries in the field of Desert Locust, the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central
Region (CRC) realized the necessity of issuing an inclusive simplified glossary. The glossary would include
scientific and technical terms that are commonly used in the field of Locust and Grasshoppers together with
their corresponding meanings and detailed explanations in English and Arabic in order to gratify the urgent
need of professionals involved in both applied and research fields.
In this regard, the glossary working paper was endorsed by the 24th Session of the FAO-CRC in April 2004 in
Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. CRC, then entrusted a consultant to prepare this glossary in both English and Arabic
languages, on the understanding that the French translation would be prepared by the Commission for
Controlling the Desert Locust in the Western Region.
The preparation of this glossary has taken three years of continuous work and the task was enormous, as it
involved drafting, correcting and checking a large amount of material, compiling and studying the collected
data and explanations in order to evaluate what was to be included and what was to be omitted. This
glossary is described as "encyclopaedic", because the methodology adopted during the preparation process
allows using it either as a glossary or as an encyclopaedia, maximizing the benefits for those studying,
researching, working and translating in the field of acridology.
Initially, the consultant devoted himself to gathering and selecting most of the English expressions, terms
and scientific idioms that are commonly and frequently used, in addition to any other available new material.
He then determined the validity of the entries to be included and elaborated, relying on more than thirty years
of experience in the field of plant protection, particularly in the field of locust control and research, utilizing
each and every available resource, and in consultation with other experts.
The glossary is presented in a way that enables the user to find the English explanation for any English term
and its corresponding Arabic meaning in a simple and comprehensible language. Furthermore, while
searching the glossary for the meaning of any term, the user can also track all the related terms or any
available materials about a relevant subject through the references presented between brackets below the
English and Arabic meanings and explanations.
After circulation of the English draft of the glossary to experts and specialists for feedback, it was then
finalized and the Arabic version has been prepared. Due to the obvious variation in the Arabic terms,
meanings and explanations used in the countries of the Arab region, it was very helpful to utilize available
encyclopaedias, scientific glossaries and even the vocabulary lists that appear at the end of some Arabic text
books, in order to reach a common language that could be used and easily understood. In addition, more
than one corresponding Arabic meaning is provided for some of the concepts in order to include most of the
popular meanings used in different Arab countries and to allow the user to choose the meaning that is most
relevant to the context trying to avoid any synonymic confusion. The Arabic equivalents provided for the
English terms are presented in a descending order of importance. Also, the user may find that some of the
Arabic derivatives are not linguistically correct, however they were provided since they are more common
and widely used and known among the professionals in the field.
The glossary abounds with scientific and technical English complex terms and idioms whose precise
meanings can not easily be identified in the agricultural fields, and thus Arabic meanings were presented to
express the meaning of these terms and idioms plainly and honestly as far as possible, however, in the case
where no Arabic equivalent or definition exists, the term or the idiom was precisely and carefully translated
by the consultant.
Finally, the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central Region would like to express its
appreciation and deep gratitude to everyone who contributed in a way or another to produce the glossary in
this form.
Professor Dr Mahmoud Fahmy Harb, the author of this glossary, is an eminent Professor in the Plant
Protection Research Institute in Cairo, Egypt. He was born in Egypt in January 1943 and graduated from
Ain Shams University in Egypt, 1968, with a BSc in Agriculture, Economic Entomology Department. He
received both a MSc in Toxicology of Insecticides, 1976, and a PhD in Locust Control, 1984, from Al
Azhar University, Egypt.
Dr Harb spent more than 35 years in the field of research and locust control, in addition to allied sciences
and other activities. He published many scientific papers and supervised several postgraduate theses
(MSc and PhD) in the faculties of Agriculture and Science.
He conducted numerous study tours to East Africa (Ethiopia, Kenya and Sudan in the period 19831985); to India at New Delhi Agricultural Research Centre, 1980; to the USA at the Universities of
California and Oregon, 1990; and to UK at Imperial College London, 1998. All these tours were
connected to the field of locusts, pesticides, sprayers, and ground and aerial spraying techniques.
He carried out a number of consultancy missions for the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United
Nations (FAO) in Oman and Saudi Arabia in 1976 and in 1992, in connection with Desert Locust survey
and control techniques.
Dr Harb contributed to international cooperation in the agriculture sector. He was selected by the Arab
Organization for Agricultural Development (AOAD) in 1998 to perform a regional study that included nine
Arab countries and to draft a project document in order to disseminate and apply remote sensing
techniques and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) to monitor desertification and Desert Locust
movements. This task was accomplished in cooperation with the Soil and Water Research Institute
(SWRI), Egypt. Dr Harb also participated in an Egyptian-Libyan international cooperation meeting held in
Tripoli, Libyan Arab Jamahiriya, in 2001- for the coordination of joint survey and control operations.
He worked as a Master Trainer in the field of locust survey and control techniques as well as ground and
aerial spraying equipment at both the national and regional levels (Oman, 1992; Yemen, 1995 and Syria,
2003). He also organized and held more than 50 training courses in the same field and prepared the
relevant scientific material. These courses took place all over Egypt under the National American
Research Project (NARP), which began in 1995 and lasted five years.
Dr. Harb is a member of the Entomological Society of America and the Entomological Society of Egypt
as well as the Permanent Committee for Evaluation of Sprayers at the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture.
He participated in two international workshops: one organized by FAO in 1994 and the other coorganized by FAO and the Emergency Prevention System for Transboundary Animal and Plant Pests
and Diseases (EMPRES) in 2002, on the evaluation of sprayers used in locust control and on the
establishment of the standards of the basic designs and performance of the Ultra Low Volume (ULV)
sprayers.
Throughout his career, Dr Harb attended and participated in many national and international scientific
conferences and in the meetings of the Commission for Controlling the Desert Locust in the Central
Region, which are held regularly in one of the countries of the Region, as well as in the FAO Desert
Locust Control Committee (DLCC) which is usually held at FAO Headquarters in Rome, Italy.
Over the past seven years, Dr Harb has translated many publications, bulletins, press releases, technical
brochures, guidelines, booklets, user manuals for equipment and sprayers, and scientific books, as well
as the Desert Locust Guidelines (7 volumes) and Spraying Equipment Guidelines (10 volumes) issued
by FAO in English. All these publications pertain to the fields of locust, pesticides, equipment, spraying
technologies, plant protectionetc.
The online and the printable version (in pdf) of this glossary have been prepared with the assistance of the
Meeting Programming and Documentation Service, KCCM.

code letters of
Pesticide formulations are usually designated by
pesticide formulations a two letter code to indicate the type of
formulation, for example "EC" indicates that the
pesticide is an emulsifiable concentrate and the
"D" represents a dust. These codes may also
describe how the pesticide is intended to be
used, what is used for, or describe some special
characteristics of the formulation. In some
cases, they indicate that the formulation is
intended for use in a specific location.

commissions (for
A group of governments that agree to the
controlling the desert necessity of preventing losses to agriculture in
locust)
certain regions caused by the Desert Locust.
Three commissions for controlling the Desert
Locust have been established by virtue of an
agreement within the framework of the Food and
Agriculture Organization of the United Nations.
Its object is to plan and promote national,
regional and international research and action
with respect to the survey and control of Desert
Locust in certain region of its distribution area.
Each commission has its own secretary who is
responsible for implementing the policies and
activities of the commission. The three
commissions are: 1- Commission for Controlling
the Desert Locust in the Central Region (CRC)
(previously Commission for Controlling the
Desert Locust in the Near East), it consists of 16
countries: Bahrain, Djibouti, Egypt, Eritrea,
Ethiopia, Iraq, Jordon, Kuwait, Lebanon, Oman,
Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, United Arab
Emirates and Yemen. 2- Commission for
Controlling the Desert Locust in the Western
Region (CLCPRO) (previously Commission for
Controlling the Desert Locust in North-West
Africa "CLCPANO"), it consists of 10 countries:
Algeria, Burkina Faso, Chad, Libyan Arab
Jamahiriya, Mali, Mauritania, Morocco, Niger,
Senegal and Tunisia. 3- Commission for
Controlling the Desert Locust in the Eastern
Region (also called Commission for Controlling
the Desert Locust in the South West Asia
"SWAC"), it consists of 4 countries: Afghanistan,
India, I.R. Iran and Pakistan.

cannot be predicted with certainty. An effective
contingency plan for controlling the Desert
Locust often consists of several scenarios
involving different levels of locust infestations
and addresses issues associated with efficient
organization and logistics, quick availability of
pesticides, rapid mobilization of resources, spray
aircraft on short notice, emergency funds,
equipment stocks, environmental monitoring,
skilled and trained staff and technical assistance.

A term describes the gradual deterioration of a
material due to chemical or electrochemical
reactions caused by its environment or use. This
type of deterioration usually affects metallic
materials, and typically produces oxide(s) and/or
salts of the original metal. Corrosion also
includes the dissolution of ceramic materials and
refers to discolouration and weakening of
polymers by the sun ultraviolet light, (e.g.
deterioration of a sprayer parts or pesticide
containers).

A device uses a spring loaded diaphragm to shutoff chemical flow to an atomizer when not
spraying. Usually used with a secondary shut-off
valve inside the atomizer (e.g. Micronair mini
AU5000) to ensure an immediate and precise
shut-off at the end of each spray run. Diaphragm
check valve is mounted in front of the atomizer.

894
Use high voltage static electricity (usually 23,00035,000 v) to cause atomization of spray liquid
and may, simultaneously, produce an
electrostatic charge on the droplet. Electrostatic
atomizers are used as hand-held or vehiclemounted applicators, but are not get available for
airborne systems. These atomizers produce an
almost uniform droplet spectrum and have a
complete wrap round effect on plants. The
equipment produces a small swath width with, in
general, droplets below volume median diameter
50 microns. Rotary atomizers, combined with an
electro-charged device, produce droplets through
the centrifugal force of the atomizer and use a
lower electric charge to reduce drift of droplets
and ensure higher particle recovery.

1104 foot transects (of
locust survey)
Definition / Remarks
This is one of the two methods of ground
surveys often used to count and monitor locust.
A foot transect consists of walking a certain
distance in the desert and making observations
in order to collect data about locusts, rainfall,
vegetation and soil. A standard width of one
metre and at least 100m (usually 300m) walking
distance can be used. The width of a transect
may vary depending on the ability to disturb
locusts under different ecological and weather
conditions.

A common entomopathogenic fungi (developed
anisopliae
into biological insecticide) that can be used to
(Metschnikoff) Sorokin control a variety of insect pests. M. anisopliae
var. acridum (formerly M. flavoviride) has been
the most successful of the biopesticides tested
and can be used against the Desert Locust. A
ULV product known as Green muscle has been
developed and registered for this purpose.
Metarhizium has good contact action, unlike any
of the other candidate biopesticides. Spores of
Metarhizium anisopliae adhere to the insect
surface, germinate and penetrate the host. After
proliferation in the haemolymph, the insect dies.

Definition / Remarks
The way in which a pesticide affects the
anatomy, physiology, or biochemistry of an
target pest to destroy or control it. Understanding
mode of action makes it easier to Locust Control
Officer to select the right compound and predict
which insecticide will work best in a particular
situation (locust swarms/hopper bands). In
general, pesticides within a chemical class have
the same mode of action on specific type of
pests (e.g. organophosphate and carbamate
insecticides inhibit the acetylcholinestrase
enzyme).

segment. The pleuron of the prothorax is very
much reduced; all that can be seen of it is a
small triangular plate projecting from beneath the
edge of the tergum just above the leg base
which is known as episternum. The pleura of the
meso- and metathorax are more or less similar
in structure and clearly separated throughout
there length by a clear intersegmental suture.
Each pleuron is divided by a longitudinal ridge

Definition / Remarks
One of the important performance criteria used
when choosing a locust spray equipment. The
term refers to a sprayers quality of being
practical in the field. An example of impracticality
might be the pesticide tank being too small so
that frequent refilling is necessary. Another
example would be a sprayer with poor access to
the filters, making them difficult to clean.

Definition / Remarks
A receptor (usually internal) that may signal the
movements of a joint, the force generated by a
muscle, and the distortions of the cuticle that
result from changes in the loading on the body,
or from the contractions of the muscles. These
effects are thus usually generated by the actions
of the locust itself, but the same receptors will
also signal externally imposed movements of the
joint or the deformations of the exoskeleton.
Some proprioceptors may thus at times act like
exteroceptors.

Definition / Remarks
The sexual or asexual process by which
organisms generate new individual of the same
kind. Reproduction is perhaps most commonly
used in the context of biological reproduction and
sex. The first stage in the production of any
organism is the fertilization of ova by
spermatozoa (or spores in the case of plants).
Fertilization produces a single cell called a zygot
which contains all the information required to
build the other organisms. The progression
(growth) from zygote to adult is achieved through
cell division.

Definition / Remarks
In which a disc, plate, brush or cage is rotated by
a motor or propeller, mainly make use of
centrifugal forces to atomize spray liquids into
droplets. Liquid is fed onto these rotating devices
and the size of the droplets depends on speed of
rotation (i.e. the faster the rotation, the smaller
the droplets). An increase in the flow rate of the
liquid increases the size of droplets. Droplet
spectrum is narrowest with a low flow rate. Motordriven rotary atomizers may be powered by
electricity, hydraulic or air pressure, whilst
propeller-driven models on aircraft make use of
the slipstream produced by the forward speed of
the aircraft to turn the propeller. In general,
rotary atomizers are more efficient than hydraulic
nozzles and can produce a narrower droplet
spectrum. Rotary atomizers are the most
efficient type of atomizer for ULV spraying for
controlling the Desert Locust.
