Stem and Leaf Plots

Pre-Evaluation
Place your name and date on the top of
the page.
Work without help.
Do your best to answer each question.
Turn your paper over and sit quietly
when you are finished.
You will have 5 minutes to complete the
work.
Include, units, keys/legends, and titles
Mean
Mean
Definition: The average of the numbers
given by the data.

Calculating the mean: Find the sum of
all the values given by the data and
divide by the number of values that were
used.

Median
Median
Definition: The middle value of the data.

Calculating the median: List the data in
an increasing order and find the position
of the value in the middle of the list.
Range
Range
Definition: The difference between the
highest and lowest bounds of the data.

Calculating the range: Subtract the
smallest number from the largest
number given in the data.
Mode
Mode
Definition: The number that is most often
repeated.

Out of mean, median, range, and mode,
the mode is the only one that can have
more than one possible value.

Stem and Leaf Plot
The number(s) in the greatest come
value is used for the stems. The number
in the next least commonplace value is
used to form the leaves.

Example:
22, 26, 27, 31, 33, 35, 42, 44, 46, 57,
58, 59, 61, 63, 64, 65, 67

22, 26, 27, 31, 33, 35, 42, 44, 46, 57, 58, 59,
61, 63, 64, 65, 67
So, we write these numbers with their
tens digits on the left (the stems) and
their ones digits on the right (the
leaves).

Things to consider
Why is it beneficial to use a stem-and-
leaf plot when analyzing statistical data?

Do you think that the mean, median,
mode, and range will be different when
the data is in centimeters rather than
inches?
Activity
Complete this assignment on the iPads
and we will discuss your answers
afterwards.
Work with your seat partner to make a stem-
and-leaf plot using the data listed on the
board.
Compute the mean, median, mode, and
range for this data using the stem-and-leaf
plot you created.
What questions do you have?
Discussion
What did you notice about the values for
mean, median, range, and mode when
the data was in centimeters?

What makes a stem-and-leaf plot useful
in analyzing statistical data?
Post-evaluation
Clear your desks except for pencil and calculator.

Place your name and date in the upper right hand
corner of the worksheet.

Answer each question to the best of your ability.

You are to work alone.

Round your answers to the nearest tenths.
Include units, labels, and keys/legends.

When finished, sit quietly until we have collect all the
materials.

Goodbye!
Thanks again for an awesome class! We
cant wait to come back to teach our
third lesson.
