Barnes Hamlet Act III Response



The mood shift in Act III of Shakespeares Hamlet is the most significant event in the
entire act. Scene iv takes place in Queen Gertrudes closest(private quarters). Hamlet is having
a heated discussion with his mother,

anger radiating from everything he says. By accusing his mother of honeying and making love
(III iv 103) with the enemy, Hamlets tone affects the mood, causing there to be tension and
resentment.
The mood swings dramatically at the appearance of the Ghost. The ghost reprimands
Hamlet and reminds him to not forget [the] almost blunted purpose (III iv 104). With a
revival of his mission, Hamlet changes to a softer and less harsh tone which in turn make the
mood softer and less harsh.

The mood change is the most influential part of Act III. The cause for revenge is brought
back into sight and with a more dignified manner. Now Hamlet has a leveled head and can
pursue the true purpose and fulfill his dead fathers plea.
