Introduction

I decided to apply for two internship positions. The first one is a Heath Care Analyst position for
the Hay Group. I decided to choose this internship because the health care career particularly
interests me since it is a high paced job that challenges me to use my knowledge of mathematics
and risk management to figure out prices of premiums for clients. The second internship is
Informatics/Research Analytics position with Independence Blue Cross. This internship
interested me because it is a research position and I have experience in modeling data and
making conclusions about that data through my statistics classes.

Hay Group Internship

The first internship is for a Pension and Health Care Analyst position. The analyst works with
developing short and long term strategies that will meet the clients benefits and financial needs.
In this position, the intern will work with a consultant and learn the design, financing, pricing
and administration for clients pension and health care programs. The Hay Group looks for
motivated candidates with strong analytical and communication skills. They also want this
individual to be able to work with a team to effectively meet tight deadlines. A degree in
Mathematics, Statistics, Actuarial Science, Finance, or Engineering is also desired. In my cover
letter, I emphasized my qualifications by breaking it into education and prior work experiences.
For education, I highlighted my risk management, statistics, algebra and english classes.
Through these classes, I gained education in pension plans, calculations, data analysis and
communication within the sciences. For previous work experiences, I first highlighted my
internship at Benetrends. This internship gave me experience in data processing (form 5500s,
reconciliations) that the Hay Group implements in their internship. Lastly, I highlighted my
position as a transition orientation leader. This has given me leadership skills that will help me
run a team. These skills are all reflected in the job description and will make me stand out.

Independence Blue Cross Internship

The last internship is for an Informatics/Research Analytics position. This intern works with
researching and analyzing care in order to explain trends and improve in certain areas if
necessary. Independence Blue Cross looks for skills in technical writing, data analysis, and
knowledge of data programs such as SAS and Excel. In my cover letter, I emphasized my
qualifications by breaking it into education and prior work experiences. For education, I
highlighted my statistics and English classes. Through these classes, I gained education in data
analysis and SAS. For previous work experiences, I first highlighted my internship at
Benetrends. This internship provided me with experience in a professional work environment.
Lastly, this internship taught me how to work in a team in order to quickly and efficiently
complete the task that we were assigned. These are all skills that are listed in the job description
that will let me stand out when compared to other applicants.

Hay Group

Dear Human Resources Manager:

I am applying for the Pension and Health Care Analyst full time temporary summer internship
that I found out about through Jim McPhillips at the Pennsylvania State University actuarial
science job fair during October of 2013. The Pension and Health Care Analyst position is
appealing to me because it relates to my class work in risk management and statistics. I also
have prior work experience in data processing from my previous internship this past summer
with Benetrends. The culmination of these skills qualifies me for the position.

At The Pennsylvania State University, I have studied risk management and pension programs,
where I have gained knowledge of defined benefit and defined contribution plans, along with
how to complete calculations of various health care packages. I have also mastered the
fundamentals of data analysis through my statistics and algebra classes. Finally, I have also taken
a technical writing class that has taught me how communicate effectively within the sciences.
These classes will aid me when processing and preparing reports for clients of the Hay Group

Out of the classroom, I already have experience in data processing, an integral component of the
Hay Group internship. My previous internship with Benetrends provided me with experience in
creating Form 5500s, reconciliations, and Excel pivot tables. The internship program also gave
me office experience and team building skills which are important tools that the Hay Group
values. I am also part of the transition orientation leader program at The Pennsylvania State
University. This has given me leadership skills necessary to succeed in any work environment.
This program helps transfer students make a smooth transition to University Park campus with
the help of students that have already made the transfer.

Cross that I discovered through the SciOpps database February 18, 2014. As a purchaser of
your health insurance, I am familiar with your health care program and strive to be a part of the
team that contributes to the success of Independence Blue Cross. I believe that my education in
statistics qualifies me for the position, and my previous internship with Benetrends provides me
with skills corresponding to core values of Independence Blue Cross.

At The Pennsylvania State University, I have studied data analysis acquired in statistics and
algebra classes. Specifically, I have studied stochastic processes and probability theory, where I
have gained knowledge of probability models and interpretation of statistical data, as well as
evaluation of data through SAS. I have taken a technical writing class that has taught me how
communicate at a professional level. These classes will aid me when extracting and processing
data for my insurance team.

Out of the classroom, I already have experience in a professional office environment. Since
Independence Blue Cross is a large company that is constantly expanding, team work is a crucial
tool in order to succeed. My previous internship with Benetrends provided me with the
