TheEffectsofMapleSyruponFlowerLongevity

Purpose:ThepurposeofthisexperimentwastotesttheeffectsofMaplesyruponflower
longevity.ThegoalofthisexperimentwastoseeifusingMaplesyrupwouldincreasethe
lifespanofMrs.Osflowersbytestingoneflowerinplainwater,andanotherinmaplesyrupand
water.

Hypothesis:Iftheflowersweredyingwhilebeingkeptinplainwater,thenIfiguredsyrupwould
maketheflowerlivelongerduetoitsnaturalingredientsandvitaminsthatitcontains.Weexpect
thatthenaturalingredientswillcausetheflowertolivelonger.

300mlofWater
50mlofMapleSyrup

Procedures:
Step1:GrabtwoplasticcupsandaHotPinkSharpiemarker.
Step2:LabelonecupControlandtheotherExperimental.
Step3:Grabtheplasticcuplabeledcontrol,andfillitwith150mlofwater.
Step4:Graboneflowerandchopoffthestemtoexactly9inches.
Step5:Placetheflowerinthethecupofwaterrightsideup.
Step6:Grabtheotherplasticcupandfillitwith150mlofwateralongwith50mlofmaplesyrup.
Step7:Stirthewaterandmaplesyrupwithaneyedropperuntilthesyrupiscompletelydissolved
Step8:Grabanotherflowerandapairofscissors,andcutthestemoftheflowertoexactly9
inches.
Step9:Setthenewlychoppedflowerinthecupofsyrupandwater.

Duringthefirstdayoftheexperimentboththecontrolandexperimentalflowersstartedoutasa

best).Theexperimentalflowersmostsignificantdeteriorationoccurredbetweendaysfiveand
six.Ourcontrolexperimentwasaplain9inchflowerin150mlofwater.Ourexperimentwas
anidenticalflowerin150mlofwaterand50mlofMaplesyrup.Thecontrolgroupshowedlittle
deteriorationoverthecourseoftheexperiment.Theexperimentalflowerhowevershowed
massivedeteriorationafteraboutoneworkweek.

Conclusion:WhenMrs.Osflowersweredyinganexperimentwasconductedasanattemptto
findawaytoincreasethelifespanofthesesaidflowers.Theexperimentconductedconsistedof
oneplasticcupfilledwith150mlofwateranda9inchfloweraswellasonecupfilledwith150
mlofwaterand50mlofmaplesyrup.Theexperimentwasobservedforatotalofsevendays.
Duringthecourseofthesevendaysitwaslearnedthatthehypothesisofthisexperimentwas
incorrect.Theexperimentalflowershowedrapiddeteriorationwhilethecontrolflowerseemedto
deteriorateatanormalandmuchslowerrate.Thisprovedthatthehypothesesreasoningthat
nutrientswillhelpwaswrong.Oncealldatawascollecteditwasfiguredthatthenutrientsof
maplesyrupinfactdonotincreaseaflowerslifespanbutactuallydecreasesit.Certainerrors
mayhaveimpactedthefindingsofourexperiment.Theseerrorsincludeclimatechangewithin
theroomtheexperimentwasheldinandlackofobservationondays3and4.Questionsfor
furtherresearchinclude:Whatwouldthedatasayiftheflowerhadbeenconsistentlyobserved
throughouttheentireexperiment?Didthechangingofthetemperatureoftheroomthe
experimentwaskeptinspeeduporslowdownthedeteriorationprocess?Thissituationcould
beappliedtohumanhealth.Plantsarelivingandbreathingthingsasarehumans,soifsyrup
didnthelpincreasetheirlifespanandpossiblydecreasedit,itwouldprobablydothesamefor
humans.
