Lesson Title: Children in the Civil War
Common Core Standards: RI.5.4 Determine the meaning of general
academic and domain specific words and phrases in a text relevant to
a grade 5 topic or subject area. W.5.3 Write narratives to develop
real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique,
descriptive details, and clear event sequences.

Objectives
Students will demonstrate understanding of
vocabulary specific to World War II by using it in
various forms of writing.

Materials &
Resources
Smart Board, computer, notecards, crossword
puzzle, letter home template, hardtack, pencils.

Anticipatory
Set
The teacher will display a photograph of a young
civil war soldier on the Smart Board. In groups,
students will write down observations about the
picture. After they write down 3-5 observations,
they will write down 3-5 predictions. The class will
have a short discussion about their observation and
predictions.

Objective
Today we are going to get a glimpse of what life
was like for a young Civil War soldier.


Input (What
students already
know.)
This lesson will take place at the end of the unit on
the Civil War, so students will already have some
prior knowledge of the Civil War.
Model (How will
you demonstrate
skills?)
The teacher will have an I See and I wonder
notecard printed out as a sample to show students.
Check for
Understanding
The teacher will give a short PowerPoint
presentation about children soldiers in the Civil
War. The teacher will discuss their jobs, food they
ate, and what they did during their free time. The
teacher will ask comprehension questions
throughout the presentation. The teacher will then
pass out hardtack for the students to sample.


Guided
Practice
Students will write take the place of a young Union
soldier and will write a letter home to their parents
and loved ones. The letter will include vocabulary
words that were introduced in the PowerPoint
presentation. The teacher will walk around and
help any students who have questions. The
students will then read their letters aloud to the
class.
Independent
Practice
The students will complete a crossword puzzle
featuring the vocabulary words from the
presentation.
Closure
The class will have a short review of the new
vocabulary terms they just learned.
