The valve body is the brains of a transmission.
That transmission isnt fxed until the valve body is
right. And that means getting to the root cause of
the problem, not just treating the symptoms.
Nobody knows valve bodies like Sonnax.

A
s 2010 draws to a close,
the transmission market-
place marks the final days
of a couple of iconic representa-
tions of our industry.
Frank Slocum will be retiring
from Raybestos Powertrain.
During the 1970s, Frank was well
known throughout the Northeast
as a representative for Key
Transmission, a regional distribu-
tor of transmission parts. And,
Frank took an advisory role to
Chuck Hansen, who developed
one of the first transmission diag-
nostic machines, leading to the
formation of Zoom Technologies.
At Raybestos, Frank estab-
lished a reputation with all for in-
dustry and product knowledge;
his support of rebuilder educa-
tion; a quick, irreverent wit; and
an absolute belief in the products
he was responsible for selling.
His Frankly Speaking column
in the Raybestos High Gear
newsletter has been a great read.
Frank could make any story in-
teresting! I recall picking him up
at our local airport back in the
1990s. As we headed to the office
he was relating one of his indus-
try stories as I alternated between

mirthful laughter and apprecia-
tion for the mans knowledge of
people and companies. As he fin-
ished, I realized that hed had me
so rapt that wed gone two exits
past the office.
Ill miss Franks annual lobby-
ing for Transmission Digest to
publish an April Fools parody
issue.
This year we also say goodbye
to operations at General Motors
Willow Run Transmission plant
adjacent to the Willow Run air-
port near Ypsilanti, Mich.
That facility is steeped in histo-
ry. Both the plant and the adja-
cent airfield were built by Henry
Ford for production of B-24
Liberator bombers during World
War II. At the height of the war,
that facility turned out one of the
storied planes every hour.
Post-war, the site became an
assembly plant for Kaiser Motors
before being acquired by GM,
originally as an assembly plant
for Chevy trucks and the Corvair.
Over the years, GM assembled a
number of vehicles there, and the
plant became synonymous with
Hydra-Matic, later GM
Powertrain, transmissions.

John Parmenter because of the technical
seminars he presents at Showpower Expo
and his service with the Precision International
Technical Advisory Board. When hes not provid-
ing tips to fellow rebuilders at a seminar or on the
tech line, though, hes at the bench rebuilding
transmissions in the shop he owns and operates on
Long Island.
John has owned Centereach Transmission for 25
years. The 5,000-square-foot facility, which was
part of a transmission-repair franchise when he
bought it, has five lifts and a four-man crew.
Part of his role with the Precision advisory board
is providing technical assistance to rebuilders hav-
ing a problem with a rebuilding kit or a transmis-
sion theyre working on. Members of the board also
meet monthly to discuss how they can improve the
product to help rebuilders. Because he rebuilds
transmissions every day, he can offer a real-world
perspective to a fellow rebuilder, he said.

If I worked at the company and
I sat in an office, you wouldnt
have that same kind of feeling.
And when I talk with the guys on
the tech line, talking with a fellow
rebuilder, its not somebody in an
office. Its Hey, listen, I did this
last week; try this.
The key to the success of his
shop has been looking to achieve
customer satisfaction at every
level, John said. The retail public
are really picky about things, but
theyre also really smart about
stuff now. Listening to the cus-
tomers complaints and addressing
them and explaining things to
them, that really works out well.
For example, a customer may
need a transmission rebuilt and
will mention that he never liked
the way it shifted. Does the guy
want it to shift a little bit softer or a
little bit harder, and you try to ad-
just the shift according to that, and
the customer-satisfaction level gets
to the next step. Besides just fixing
the problem and getting the car
moving again, now youve fixed
the car and made them happy.
Theyll talk about it at parent-
teacher night, theyll talk about it
at barbecues, and theyll rave
about you.
Because of the reputation
Centereach Transmission has de-
veloped, the shop does little adver-
Technician Ray Shannon, who was a NASCAR technician for five years,

tising except for a presence in the
local newspapers, John said. At
this point, the word of mouth is so
strong that we schedule work in
now. I trimmed the crew down
from eight guys to four, and we
pick and choose our work now.
In addition to automatic trans-
missions, the shop repairs manual
transmissions and differentials.
R&R technician Ray Shannon is the
differential specialist.
Customers will come to us
from almost 100 miles away to
have differentials rebuilt because
no one around here will do differ-
entials anymore, John said. They
wont change the ring and pinion
or the gears or the bearings; they
wont get involved in it. Thats a
big part of our business now.
John has spent his whole work-
ing life in automotive repair. While
in high school, he studied auto me-
chanics in vocational training
school and attended Denver
Automotive & Diesel College for
two years.
Back in the 70s when you got
specialized in a trade it was worth
more money. At that time trans-

missions were starting to get more
complicated and that was the way
to go to make more money. Being a
general mechanic and a repair
shop would yield only so much
money, but when you became spe-
cialized in something you were in
demand then. Thats how I got into
that niche.
I was working out of my par-
ents garage for about three years
doing transmission work and then
doing general-repair work in a re-
pair shop until I got it down to
where I needed to get it. Thats
what was the jewel of this, that I
started out doing that and my
mom would come to a lot of the
seminars, my son would come to
the seminars, and my mother
would remember me doing stuff in
the garage on the weekend, trying
to get stuff figured out, and then
see me teaching 500 guys in a
room. That was pretty cool for my
mom to see that.
Because proper diagnosis is crit-
ical to a successful repair, the shop
has dedicated factory scan tools for
all the vehicle makes, John said.
Weve invested heavily into the
scan tools. We have enough diag-
nostic equipment to dissect some-
thing pretty severely.
You have to really diagnose it
properly, you have to drive the life
out of it to see whats going on
with it, to find the problem. Thats
Ray and technician Dan Demateo

Connecting with People
A
lthough some shop owners and technicians see the trans-
mission-repair industry as a brutal business that can be
hard on a person, John Parmenter says he has seen the other
side of the coin as a result of the friendships he has devel-
oped.
Ive made friends with people through the years. You dont
realize how deep the friendship goes. My mom passed away in
March, and I got phone calls and flowers, cards and letters
from people in the industry as far away as Australia and
Puerto Rico. You dont think of it as family, and youll go to
these seminars and have coffee and sit down and have some-
thing to eat, but you dont realize the connection you make
with people. This industrys full of good people. Its just amaz-
ing.
Among those he mentions specifically are Ed Lee, former
owner of Deltrans in Newark, Del., and now a Sonnax technical
specialist, and Jim Dial of ATSG. After Johns mother died, Ed
came down from Delaware the next morning and stayed three
days. Jim is a friend whos always willing to listen when John
needs to talk.
There are people who sit and listen, and people dont
understand that thats of more value than money, John said.
I didnt really get that until my mother died. Everyone knew
the deal with me, that Im a single guy with my son, John III,
and my mom would help me out a lot. You dont get that until
something earth-shaking happens in your life.
Thank you to the industry for all your consideration. I want
to literally thank the industry for their support for my son and
me through our trials the last couple of years.
the biggest thing right now. And
were getting a lot of associated
work with that. Well have a car
come in and the mechanic told
them it needed a transmission,
then we drive it and find its got a
clogged fuel filter or a bad fuel
pump in the tank, and then the
customer is begging us to fix the
car. And instead of getting a $2,000
tranny, its getting a $500 fuel
pump, and now I have a customer
for life. The biggest thing is to have
a customer leave here knowing
that you know what youre doing.

A higher level.
Thats what you get with Ford gas engines
and transmissions.
A higher build level means youre getting engine and transmission assemblies built to the exacting specications of
Ford Motor Company. So you not only get the quality build you expect in an assembly from Ford, but also one thats built by
using parts that keep it specic to year, make and model as well as emissions calibrations.
Introducing the all-new 3-Year Unlimited-Mile Warranty No Commercial Exceptions
Ford gasoline engines and transmissions are covered by a three-year/unlimited-mile warranty.* All warranties are backed by
Ford Motor Company. Theyre also supported by more than 3,500 Ford and Lincoln Mercury Dealerships nationwide as well
as at their originating place of service.
Plus, unlike some competitors, the warranty is good for eet vehicles. That means you get the same advantages
and coverage for commercial use, no exceptions.

Getting Up to Speed
with the RE4F04B
T
he RE4F04B transmission is no stranger to our
technical hotline, for a variety of reasons. This
article is about a self-inflicted injury that occurs
every so often and, when it does, makes for a very bad
day.
After work is performed that required the removal
and reinstallation of the transmission, a complaint of
no upshift occurs. As a result, code P0720 is stored for
loss of an AT Revolution Sensor (OSS) signal. This is
not to be confused with a P0500 VSS code and CAN
communications codes U1000 or U1001.
Using a 2003 Nissan Altima as our example, the
P0720 is referring to the three-wire Hall-effect revolu-
tion sensor, which sends a vehicle-speed signal direct-
ly into the TCM. The P0500 is referring to the
two-wire AC-voltage speed sensor over the axle,
which sends a vehicle-speed signal into the combina-
tion meter (instrument cluster) first. The combination
meter then sends this signal to the ECM over the net-
work.
One error is misunderstanding the difference be-
tween these two codes and the sensor to which each
refers. P0720 has been misinterpreted to mean the
two-wire VSS, and the sensor is replaced with no pos-
itive results. It is then checked with a meter, which
shows a good signal, so the instrument cluster is re-
moved and may even be replaced, yet the P0720 re-
mains. We have even seen this error go as far as
having the ECM replaced, all because of misunder-
standing the code and its related sensor. When this
two-wire sensor does fail, or the instrument cluster
becomes faulty, the VSS signal in the cluster will not
work properly or will not work at all. The instrument
cluster no longer provides a speed signal to the ECM,
causing the communication CAN codes to store along
with the P0500 code.
When code P0720 is properly understood, what
usually occurs is the sensor is quickly replaced and, of
course, the problem remains. The next step that may
occur is checking the sensor signal with a scope or
digital graphing multimeter at the sensor itself. This
being a Hall-effect sensor, one wire is a power supply,
one wire is ground and the center wire produces a 0-
to 5-volt pulse to the TCM. So its an easy-enough
sensor to check. Just place the negative lead to
ground, probe into the middle wire and run the
wheels on the lift. If there is no signal and the sensor
has power and ground, either the sensor is bad or the
signal wire is shorted to ground. But in this scenario,
a good signal is observed at the sensor, suggesting the
TCM is faulty. The next step in this case would be to
check the signal at the TCM. If this step were per-
formed, it would reveal that this signal is not getting
to the TCM. Could this mean that the signal wire is
open?
In Figure 1 you will notice that the revolution sen-
sor is alongside the turbine sensor. When looking at

get them connected right the first time. If the vehicle
harness is not deteriorated, the revolution-sensor har-
ness is identified with white (Figure 4).
Since the subject is getting up to speed with the
RE4F04B, it may be a good idea to mention that there
is a difference between the RE4F04A and RE4F04B
transmissions with regard to the forward-clutch
drum. The low/reverse-clutch lugs on the drum ex-
cite the TSS, and these lugs are shallower in the A ver-
sion and taller in the B version. If the A-style drum is
used in a B-version unit, the air gap will be too great
and you will get continuous P0717 TSS codes. This is a
definite hair-pulling experience.
Another self-inflicted injury that comes up every
now and again is a complaint of a good drive engage-
ment but as soon as the throttle is depressed the vehi-
cle stalls. The TCC solenoid is replaced (which
includes all the other solenoids) and, of course, the
problem re-
mains. A com-

the connectors for these two sensors (Figure 2) you
will also notice that they are of the same configura-
tion. This then allows for these two sensors to become
cross-connected. When the sensor was being checked
with a meter at the sensor itself, the signal coming out
of the sensor was good but it was going into the tur-
bine-speed input at the TCM.
But wait a minute; if these two sensors were cross-
connected, why wasnt the turbine-speed sensor (TSS)
sending a signal into the VSS input at the TCM? Good
question. The answer is that the TSS is reading the
forward drum, which is held stationary in first gear.
There is no signal until a shift into second occurs. A
simple swapping of the connectors is all that is need-
ed to resolve the P0720 dilemma. Figure 3 identifies
the color of the center signal wire for both the turbine-
speed and revolution-sensor connectors to help you

his is our family business. We work with
and know our customers to the point that
they are almost a part of the family, ex-
plains American Torque Inc.s Rob McCarthy.
McCarthys mother, Marcia, started the business in
Queens, N.Y., in 1996, and he joined the company
soon after. The two, with insights and consulting from
Robs father, Bob, have grown the business, they say,
year after year.
Initially the company focused solely on rebuilding
torque converters. During the past couple of years,
the product assortment has grown to include used au-
tomatic-transmission and differential hard parts as
well as a line of rebuilt valve bodies.
Marcia explains the roots of the company: We had
a friend who owned a transmission shop where they
built their own torque converters. The owner suggest-
ed that there was a need for a torque-converter sup-
plier in the area and thought we could learn that
business. His converter rebuilder was the one who set
us up and taught us the skills.
The CNC machinery
doubles for use in
parts work and for
removing friction
material.
Rob McCarthy oversees a shop operation that includes
rebuilding torque converters and processing used auto-
matic-transmission and differential parts.
November 2010 15
That shop had built most of their own equip-
ment, Rob adds. As American Torque started grow-
ing, we eventually invested in bonders, welders and
all the other machinery we needed to bring up the ca-
pacity of our operation. And, the manufacturers of
those machines provided more training as well.
That was the beginning, and weve had consistent
growth since then. As weve grown, we find we most-
ly serve shop customers in the Northeast. Primarily,
that would be New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania,
Delaware, Maryland, Massachusetts and Connecticut.
We have a distributor in Philadelphia, too.
Converters and parts reach customers as will
call, by local delivery and by UPS shipment. We de-
liver, too, in a 30- to 40-mile area that encompasses
the greater New York City area and northern New
Jersey.
Noting that the number of UPS shipments has been
increasing, Rob says, I think it has been the addition
of the hard-parts line that has increased our customer
boundaries beyond the Northeast.
Rob adds that the fledgling hard-parts business
also spans most applications. He points out that it al-
ready has grown to account for about 30% of sales.
Were putting out a used-parts product that quality-
wise is as good as any that can be found. At the same
time were able to keep those parts priced in a very
customer-friendly manner.
There are some companies that specialize in exotic
or very rare parts, but their prices tend to be high
when it comes to the everyday parts that shops need
day in and day out. We want to concentrate on being
a reliable source for all the hard parts that our cus-
tomers require. At the same time, we typically will
keep those more-exotic parts on the shelf as well. The
product line weve assembled represents a complete
offering, a complete coverage of all automatic hard
parts.
Marcia describes the converter product line simply
as everything. She says the company covers all do-
mestic, European and Asian applications.
The small plant is largely used for the converter op-
eration. Borrowing from lean-manufacturing methods
typically seen in the very large operation, American
Torques workflow for converters is a space-efficient
production line that divides into individual work
cells, each performing a major portion of the work re-
quired. Each converter is dry balanced before being
boxed for sale.
Rob explains: Were running CNC machines on
the parts, a robotic welding cell and CNC turning cen-
ters to remove the friction material. At each station
weve concentrated on developing total and special-
ized expertise. Employees in each cell know which
parts are always discarded and which ones need to be
inspected so they can decide whether or not to reuse.
As for valve bodies, John Hancock, formerly the
valve-body technician at Hardparts For
Transmissions, is heading up our operation. John

Transmissions salesperson Jimmy DeShields at about
the same time. Both guys are people Id known of
through the years but never met. Again, mutual
friends put us in contact at just the right time for them
to join American Torque.
McCarthy says the hard-parts business has opened
up new opportunities to serve more-distant cus-
tomers. Theres a greater sales area for the hard
parts, and were taking advantage of cross pollina-
tion where customers are buying both lines from us
and picking up their transmission kits separately.
Thats part of the business we havent been involved
with yet.
The company buys transmissions from a variety of
sources, disassembles them and then mines all the us-
able hard parts. Electrical components are kept as
well. McCarthy says the company does a brisk busi-
ness selling solenoids, wiring harnesses, sensors and
other electrical parts.
A SolX tester is used to verify each solenoid. A few
specific-application solenoids are rebuilt, but for the
most part the company concentrates on supplying the
tested, good used electrical components.
In the shop, we do a bit of machine work on
pumps for specific applications, but primarily every-
thing we sell is used. Nearly all the cores we utilize
come from working units. Ninety percent of the time I
could install one of those units straight into a car and
it would run without problems. Because of our rela-
tionships with so many places that sell inventory to
us, were able to come across a lot of very high-quality
used parts.
The valve bodies in the American Torque rebuilt
line include all the aftermarket updates. All valve bod-

We do carry a few aftermarket new hard parts.
Thats unusual for us and not what wed prefer, but
where a used part just isnt available we need to be
able to get the customer everything he needs for the
job.
I find that most guys in the shops would prefer to
have a quality used part as opposed to spending the
extra money for a new one. Most customers are look-
ing for the good used parts that still have plenty of
miles of service left but will save them money.
I think the strength of American Torque comes
from our speed to market. By that I mean to say that
we have an unbelievable network of sources that sup-
ply us with transmissions and parts. We can typically
stock even very late-model parts so that they are
available when a customer needs them.
When we disassemble a transmission unit we try
to save everything, McCarthy says. If youre re-
building a transmission and you dont have some-
thing as simple as a snap ring, you cant finish the job.
So we need to keep everything in stock in order to be
able to deliver everything to our customer. We even
sell a lot of bolts. Thats one of those parts that guys
always seem to lose and need.
With our core network providing so many top-
quality units to us, we havent had the need to do a lot
of machine work. We have the people and the equip-
ment; its just that it isnt often that the parts require
any extra work. When we can find good used parts
that dont require that labor, were able to deliver
them to customers at the best price.
Robs father agrees, recalling: There was another
hard-parts guy from the New York area in our shop
last week. He looks in the scrap-metal bin and says:
This is a U140 planet. Are you throwing that out?
It wasnt up to our standards.
He looked at it again and says, You can get $75
for this part.
But, no, we couldnt. Were not going to sell it like
that because that would detract from our reputation.
We let him take that planetary with him.
Marcia observes: The whole business continues to
grow, but I think our parts sales are growing at an
even faster rate than the converters. What were see-
ing is that the hard parts are growing at a rate of bet-
ter than 50% while the converter business continues to
expand at a rate of around 25% each year.
Rob addresses the companys future: I think we
will increasingly compete nationally with our product
lines. As we grow, were addressing infrastructure
needs as well as processing parts in the shop.
Were setting up inventory-control methods with
bar coding in order to be able to track our inventory
and fill orders more efficiently. At that point we can
fill and ship orders anywhere in the country.
It all comes down to a relatively simple philoso-
phy: At American Torque, we want to sell the right
product, closely inspected for quality, at a customer-
friendly price. Were not giving parts away, but were
not going to add unnecessary cost, either. Thats what
we do here!

As converter tolerances have become less forgiving, a
great deal of checking and measurement is required.

the B version is configured differently from the

valve in the B version, as soon as the throttle in-
creases pilot pressure increases. This floods the
TCC solenoid, which causes it to stroke the lock-
up-control valve, applying the clutch in the con-
verter and stalling the engine.
One final and very elusive complaint that oc-
curs quite infrequently is intermittent solenoid
electrical codes. I say it is elusive because I have
handled this only on the phone and have never
seen it for myself. There are two ground wires
that come down to the transmission (Figure 9).
It is the little ground wire that gets left un-
plugged from the transmission (Figure 10),
causing these intermittent solenoid electrical
codes. And again I say it is elusive, as I have left
this wire unplugged purposely to reenact the

Listen to the

B
y listening to the customer,
not only can we often learn
what he needs but also we
sometimes can pick up valuable in-
formation that helps us solve their
problem. In this instance, listening
to the customer helped us find an
unusual problem that could have
been overlooked, leading to an ex-
pensive and unnecessary repair.
The customer brought his 2005
Ford Taurus to our shop with a
complaint of an intermittent jerk at
highway speeds. The customer had
gone through the trouble of docu-
menting the times that this jerk ap-
peared, the temperature at which it
occurred and under what driving
conditions he was feeling the inter-
mittent condition. He also told me
that another shop had recently re-
built the transmission. I took the
time to listen to him and to ask
several follow-up questions that
would help me correctly identify
the problem. It occurred only once
every couple of days.
I started my troubleshooting by
scanning and found a stored P0715
code, for a turbine-speed sensor
(TSS). This gave me a logical start-
ing point. I checked all the wiring
and the connector; they looked
good. Next, I cleared the code and
went on my first drive. Everything
checked out great, and during the
next two test drives the unit never
set another code. I decided to wait
until the next day and try it again.
At last, after a 15-mile drive I
felt a jerk and the P0715 code re-
turned. I returned to the shop and
decided to pull the TSS for a closer
inspection. The sensor looked and
tested good, and its resistance was
well within specifications. I started
to wonder whether the other shop
could have used an incorrect reluc-
tor wheel for this unit. I remem-
bered reading a bulletin produced
by our tech department that told
us of several instances in which
AX4S and AX4N transaxles were
built with an incorrect reluctor
wheel. This causes the gap be-
tween the wheel and sensor to be
either too large or too small.
This particular Taurus had a
4F50N installed in it, as the AX4S
was not available in a 2005 Taurus.
Could it be that the other shop
used an incorrect reluctor wheel? I
measured the depth of the reluctor
wheel and, sure enough, it was out
of spec for a 4F50N. This would
have been an easy fix on the older-
model Taurus with an AX4N or
AX4S because they use the same
sensor connector, but because the
4F50N uses a completely different
connector the only less-costly op-
tion was for me to splice in an
AX4S connector (part number
3U2Z-14S411-VBA) from an early-
model Taurus. It sure made the
customer a lot happier than our
having to tear down the transmis-
sion and replace the reluctor
wheel.
After completing the repair I
took the car for several test drives
with no issues. We released the car
to the customer and followed up
with him about a week later, and
he told us that the jerk was gone
and that he was very happy that
we had listened to him and
worked together to solve his prob-
lem. Thats what its all about; a
happy customer and one who actu-
ally helped us help him. Always
take the time to listen to your cus-
tomer; you just might learn how to
help solve the problem more
quickly and with less expense for
everyone.

What Could It Possibly Be?
M
any car manufacturers are designing gear-
shift levers in the center console that incor-
porate the tip up/tip down manual shift
strategy in the assembly. Those that do usually share
a common problem of liquid spills onto the circuit
board in this assembly causing a variety of undesir-
able effects. The Volkswagen New Beetle is no excep-
tion, having its cup holders positioned in a way that
allows for these spills (Figure 1); might as well leave
the sunroof open during a good dosing of rain.
Volkswagens code for a malfunction of this
Tiptronic signal is 01045 (Figure 2).
The presentation we made in ATSGs 2010 seminar
concerning this problem came from an incident Jim
Dial dealt with in a nearby shop. This vehicle would
go to immediate failsafe with all the PRNDL lights lit
up, and it had this 01045 code stored. Clear the code
and it would return immediately upon startup. When
they removed the assembly from the vehicle they dis-
covered that half of the plastic strip guard that covers
the slot where the selector-lever shaft passes through
had deteriorated. Pieces of it lay on the floor in a
sticky substance that may have been soda along with
a pile of matted cat hairs. It was the kind of job you
really needed plastic gloves for just nasty. No doubt
whatever spilled on it contributed to its failure.
Recently, a local Lee Myles shop was dealing with
a vehicle that had this 01045 code but didnt go into
failsafe right away. The symptoms it produced
seemed to indicate a bad Multi-Function Switch
(transmission-range sensor) on the transmission
rather than the Tiptronic assembly in the console. So
they brought the vehicle to our facility here in Miami.
I hooked up our Vag-Com (VCDS) to get a better
look at the system. When it arrived it was in failsafe
with code 01045 stored. I then cleared the code and
started the vehicle, and everything was good
(Figure 3). I thought to myself, maybe that means I

These days, it seems that everyone is telling you to think outside the box. When
it comes to clutch replacement, thats just not good advice. Many clutch marketers
mix and match parts from various sources, a practice that creates quality and
installation problems. The parts may bolt up, but can fail prematurely, resulting
in a comeback for you. When you install a LuK RepSet, you get the same flawless
performance as the original equipment parts.

and the code set. The Vag-Com selector-lever display
window read ERROR (Figure 7). I then placed the se-
lector lever into the Tiptronic mode (Figure 8), and
the Tiptronic display window remained empty as it
was in Figure 7. After I moved it in and out of the
Tiptronic mode several times it finally began to read
(figures 9, 10 and 11 on page 35). I erased the code,
repeated the test and had the exact same results.
The question then arose, is it the Tiptronic assem-
bly or the transmission-range sensor? The numbers
displayed in the Multi-Function Position Switch win-
dow provide a binary number representing the posi-
tion of the switch: Park = 00001001, Reverse =
00001100, Neutral = 00000101 and Drive = 00000110.
The numbers being displayed in this window
throughout the different ranges confirmed that the
Multi-Function switch was working correctly, verify-
ing that the fault was in the Tiptronic assembly.
Should the transmission-range sensor be at fault,
these binary numbers would reveal it and a code
will not be dealing with a sticky substance mingled
with matted cat hairs as Jim had to, and I smiled. I
shifted it to reverse and then to neutral and all was
still good (figures 4 and 5). But as soon as I selected
drive (Figure 6), the transmission engaged harshly

Deal with High Current and
Intermittent Failures
Tips for troubleshooting intermittent failures and no-starts
W
hat is your knee-jerk re-
action when a vehicle
rolls into your bay with
the following concern: intermittent
no-start? Personally, I usually like
to know the make and model of
the vehicle so I can tag it with a
pattern-case failure (and I will re-
visit this point a little later), but
this can often lead me to danger-
ous and time-wasting conclusions.
Case at hand: This 97 Saturn
SC1 sitting in my stall with an in-
termittent no-start concern started
up each time I cranked it, and it
ran well on a subsequent test
drive. It took many attempts
throughout the day before I dupli-
cated the customer concern, but
the no-start was brief and it didnt
recur enough to dive into a diagno-
sis. Finally, when the engine
would not fire up, I caught it in a
state of no spark, and then I began
narrowing my diagnosis from
there. When I also found that I had
no fuel pressure, I looked for com-
mon causes, and that led me to dis-
cover that I had no key-on,
engine-off power to several criti-
cal fuses in the underhood junction
block, including those for the pow-
ertrain control module (PCM) and
the fuel injectors!
At this point, the first thing that
popped into my head was the pos-
sible demise of a main power relay
you know, like the ones for
Chryslers or Hondas that deprive
unique troubleshooting opportuni-
ties for you and me.
Ignition-switch failures
How many of you have experi-
enced this failure on a vehicle?
What form did it take? I have re-
placed two of these in as many
months, which is a lot for me, and
both had separate symptoms. The
previously mentioned vehicle was
dead in the water, and the other
car simply lost its HVAC and
audio systems.
After disassembling the ignition
switch outlined in the failure
above, I discovered a set of worn,
pitted, darkened contact points
(Figure 1). It was then, while star-
ing at these contacts through a
magnifying glass, that I wondered:
Should we replace such high-cur-

Failed Saturn ignition switch with

and render the engines dead.
However, scrutinizing the
schematic revealed no such relay.
Power supply for the PCM and
fuel injectors flowed as follows:
battery to 30-amp ignition fuse in
the underhood junction block, then
through the ignition switch, and
then to a 10-amp fuse in the instru-
ment-panel fuse box, then back to
the underhood junction block,
where a single, 10-amp fused cir-
cuit fed the PCM, fuel injectors,
electronic ignition, exhaust-gas re-
circulation and backup lamps!
Wow, I thought. Why do some
manufacturers use a relay to han-
dle this much current flow, and
some dont?
When my Saturn stayed dead
long enough to allow me to funnel
my diagnosis to conclusion, I
found the culprit: a defective igni-
tion switch. Specifically, what had
failed were those overworked con-
tacts that feed the circuits de-
scribed above!
In a recent Tech to Tech article, I
explained the perils of fretting cor-
rosion: The tendency for some
male/female connections to devel-
op excessive resistance over time.
My focus this time is the burning,
pitting and metal transfer that
occur each time a set of high-cur-
rent contacts is switched on and
off, and specifically how excessive
resistance in these contacts creates continues page 30

belts, front crankshaft seal, four
camshaft seal kits, thermostat,
thermostat gasket and miscella-
neous needed hardware.
Why are we more comprehen-
sive regarding timing-belt replace-
ment? Were looking out for our
customers safety and peace of
mind. Along this line of thinking,
does replacing an ignition switch
on a high-mileage car before it fails
seem ridiculous? What about re-
lays?
Main-relay failures
Other high-current devices that
can leave our customers stranded
are relays, especially main relays
that control the PCM, ignition and
fuel delivery. A Tech Night dis-
cussion on iATN (the International
Automotive Technicians Network)
revealed how some technicians
deal with this subject. Several tech-
nicians talked about the symptoms
of failure for the Ford electronic-
engine-control (EEC) relays and
the main relays on Hondas, saying
that when the vehicle acts a certain
way they replace the relay (based
on pattern-case-failure diagnos-
tics). As you and I know, this often
works and saves a lot of diagnostic
time but sometimes backfires. The
discussion soon revealed a great
point that I had not thought of: re-
placing relays as a matter of main-
wont go up or down. If the cause
is a bad switch (Figure 3), then
the contacts can often be cleaned to
make it work again. I will do this
for customers who need their win-
dow working today but their part
wont be in until next week.
What have I learned?
Following my last ignition-
switch replacement, on the Saturn,
I am not comfortable recommend-
ing the replacement of this part
until it fails. However, I am now
more apt to use a digital volt/ohm-
meter or a lab scope to test the in-
tegrity of this power source to
critical components, especially if I
am in the middle of an intermit-
tent-failure diagnosis.
After learning about technicians
who replace main relays as preven-
tive maintenance, I have to say that
I will recommend relay replace-
ment on some vehicles to some of
my customers who have the finan-
cial means and the foresight to
support such a decision.

tenance based on vehicle mileage.
After contemplating this for a
while, I see the logic. Relays are
relatively inexpensive compared
with a tow, and some vehicles
have only one or two critical re-
lays. The exception to this rule
may be in the form of Fords con-
stant-control module (Figure 2) of
the 1990s engines that contained
the fuel-pump, PCM, air-condi-
tioning and cooling-fan relays.
During a recent repair, I discov-
ered that these modules can run as
much as $200.
Starter-motor relays/solenoids
A friend of mine has been re-
placing the contacts in Toyota
gear-reduction starters for years
instead of replacing the entire
starter motor, which can run up-
ward of $400. These NipponDenso
starters, which fit many
Mitsubishi, Toyota, Chrysler and
Honda vehicles, are repaired by
some technicians by installing a
new solenoid plunger and con-
tacts. These are the highest-cur-
rent-carrying contacts on these
vehicles, and Im often surprised
they last as long as they do. Is this
the right thing to do? I offer cus-
tomers an informed choice, and
some will opt for an entirely re-
built or new starter-motor assem-
bly, which is my choice as well.

6T70/75 Converter-Pilot Issues
G
eneral Motors introduced
the 6T70/75 transmission in
2007. This transmission is a
fully automatic six-speed unit that
features clutch-to-clutch shifting. It
is available in both front- and all-
wheel-drive vehicles. It was first
used with the 3.6-liter V-6 engine
in the 2007 GMC Acadia and
Pontiac G-6.
The torque converter is a four-
element unit: impeller, turbine, sta-
tor and clutch. A collaborative
effort by Ford and General Motors,
it is manufactured by ZF Sachs.
The converter is available with ei-
ther three, four or six mounting
pads. The Ford influence explains
why you can find a unit with four
mounting pads (Figure 1) in a GM
vehicle.
To date most of the converters
seen at converter-remanufacturing
facilities have had vibration
and/or leak complaints. After tak-
ing a closer look at the attachment
between the pilot and cover, it is
easy to see why (Figure 2).
Welding the pilot on in this
manner creates a weak point. If the
pilot is already cracked or broken
when it arrives at your shop, you
will need to install an alignment
fixture before re-welding. The
alignment fixture is necessary to
ensure that the pilot is restored to
its proper centerline prior to weld-
ing. Even if the pilot is still firmly
attached to the cover, you will
want to run a bead of weld around
the seam that joins the pilot to the
cover for added insurance.
The problems associated with
the 6T70/75 converter are a good
reason to maintain communication
between the converter and trans-
mission shops. In most instances
when the converter pilot is cracked
or broken, the flex plate is also
cracked or broken. The transmis-
sion shop must be made aware of
this because on this unit, a cracked
flex plate is difficult to see. The
cracks are often hidden because
the flex plate has a thin (0.035 to
0.040-inch) shim permanently at-
tached at the mounting-bolt area.
This thin shim will cover most
cracks until the flex plate eventual-
ly breaks into two pieces (figures 3
and 4).
Also, it is not possible to do a
satisfactory flex-plate inspection
from the transmission side of this
flex plate. Proper checking proce-
dure requires removal of the flex
plate and a thorough inspection as
you view it from the engine side.

How User Friendly Is Your Business?
T
he level of service provided
to customers is usually man-
dated by a business owner or
very high-level manager. Most of
them have lofty ideas as to how
they want their customers treated.
The problem is that as the cus-
tomer-service message filters down
through the ranks theres a good
chance that it will become diluted,
sometimes to a point where it isnt
service at all. When that happens a
business is doomed unless it can be
turned around, and that can be
very difficult after customer trust
is destroyed.
Heres an interesting case to
make the point of just how ridicu-
lous customer-service situations
can become and how if you dont
have a service representative who
cares and has the authority to do
what it takes to help customers, sit-
uations can go from bad to ugly
real quick.
I had a ticket in my hand for a
kind of crazy trip that I booked
last-minute on a major airline that
shall remain nameless. It doesnt
matter, though, because as far as
Im concerned theyre all horrible
to one degree or another, so just in-
sert the name you want. Normally
when I fly to Denver from New
York I go non-stop. Its one of the
few perks of living in a big city like
New York that you can still go
non-stop to several locales. This
time, because I booked so late, all I
could get was a one-stop through
Dulles International in
Washington, D.C., on the way out
and a flight through Salt Lake City
on the way back, and that was on a
different airline.
The day before I was supposed
look up flights and make my reser-
vations, I never before had a rea-
son to call them. I wasnt very
hopeful as I dialed the 800 number.
A friendly voice answered, one
that I could actually understand.
When I told him the story he asked
what flight I was interested in
changing to, then told me to hang
on. In about a minute he came
back and said: Youre all set. Be at
JFK International at 2 p.m.
Thats it? I asked?
Yup, he said. Nothing to it.
I asked how he did it. His an-
swer was: Pressure. Youre an in-
dividual; the airline doesnt really
care about the few flights you take
with them every year. We, on the
other hand, do millions of dollars
worth of bookings with them.
What they did to you wasnt right,
because they did have a waiver in
place for that flight and should
have given it to anyone who asked
for it, but they do things like that
because they can and because
theres no one to stop them. I guess
they dont value an individual cus-
tomer; we do. Thank you so much
for using Orbitz.
At the end of every flight that
airline has a flight attendant get on
the P.A. system and say: We real-
ize you have a choice of airlines.
Thank you so much for flying with
us. Well, its time for me to exer-
cise my choice, and while I will
happily continue to book on Orbitz
because its customer service is
great, I will do everything in my
power to avoid that airline in the
future even if it means flying out
of my way to do so. Theyve lost a
customer out of sheer stupidity
and nothing else. How ridiculous.
to leave a major hurricane was in
the process of traveling up the East
Coast. I found out it was due to
pass through and around
Washington the next morning just
about the time my flight was sup-
posed to get there if, indeed, it
had gone at all. Knowing I was in
trouble I called the airline to see
whether it could reroute me
around the storm without charging
me an arm and two legs.
At first, a voice that I could
barely understand and had to keep
asking What? told me: Sure, no
problem. We have a flight leaving
at 4 p.m. today that will take you
to Los Angeles. There you will
change planes and fly back to
Denver. You should get in about 11
p.m. local time.
I agreed to the change and was
told to hold on while he confirmed
it. After I waited on hold at least 10
more minutes the agent got back
on the line and told me he was
sorry but he could not make the
change even though the airline had
a hardship policy for these occa-
sions. He said it was because only
part of my trip was booked on
their airline. I argued that the part
that needed to be changed was on
their airline. I mentioned that I am
a frequent flyer with hundreds of
thousands of miles. It didnt mean
a thing. I was told there was noth-
ing they would do for me and that
I should contact the online site on
which I booked the trip to see
whether they could do anything to
help.
I proceeded to call Orbitz.
Although I had been booking trav-
el with them for the past several
years and found it very pleasant to

It wouldnt have cost the airline
whether they did it for me or for
Orbitz. They wound up doing it
anyway and lost a customer in the
process.
How hard or easy do you make
it for your customers to do busi-
ness with you? I dont know
whether any of you study busi-
nesses as you deal with them. I do.
I scrutinize every little thing they
do when I am a customer. Im
looking for an experience so enjoy-
able that I will genuinely want to
return over and over again. Its
definitely not easy for a business to
maintain such high standards,
which is one of the major reasons
why customers quit. They get used
to a certain performance level and
when they believe they are no
longer getting it they go look for it
elsewhere.
Dealing with customers is al-
ways tricky, but there are some
basic rules that can keep you on
track. The goal is consistency, pro-
viding the same or very similar ex-
perience every time. Here are some
points to consider:
1) Try to keep employees with per-
sonality disorders away from
customers. Bi-polar or de-
pressed individuals go through
major mood swings. Theyre
great one minute and miserable
the next. Consistency, therefore,
is not part of their repertoire.
You need people who are up all
the time, who are enthusiastic
about dealing with customers
and making them happy.
2) Understand that your primary
concern is to make the business
a success and keep it that way.
To do that it has to make money.
A profit must be made on each
job, other than the occasional
loss leader designed to bring
new customers in, so your level
of customer service cant take
you to the point where you lose
money on jobs just to get them
in the door. You must reach a

happy medium as to how far
you will go to keep a customer.
The question: Is this customer
worth what I will have to in-
vest? In some instances you
wont know on the first job or
maybe even the second or third.
You might not make money
with this person immediately,
but you cant turn right around
and cancel him out. It costs you
too much to bring him in. In
time, if you find the relationship
to be one-sided, if you arent
making money or getting the re-
ferrals you need, dump him and
move on. The best way to dump
a customer is to simply price
him out of your life. When the
price gets so high that he is no
longer willing to pay, hes done,
and this type of customer proba-
bly wont stand for the first
price increase, so it wont take
long.
3) Be open when they need you.
Although its nice to have week-
ends off, we have to realize that
many of our customers can get
things accomplished only on
weekends. Their jobs prohibit
them from taking care of their
personal business during the
work week. Some shops are in
areas where there just isnt any
activity on a Saturday. Others
seem to have it as their busiest
day of the week. Your business
hours need to accommodate
your customers as well. Are you
there early enough and do you
stay late enough to make it con-
venient for drop-off and pick-
up?
4) Most of us like to have cus-
tomers drop off cars rather than
wait. If you want them to do
that you may need to have a
driver on the payroll at least
part time to take customers
home or to work and bring them
back later when their cars are
ready.
5) The word NO should be
stricken from the company vo-
cabulary. YES or some form of
it must be adopted: Yes, we can
take care of that for you. Yes,
you can bring it in this after-
noon. Yes, I can give you a
price on that just as soon as my
technician has a look at it, as
opposed to No, we dont give
prices over the telephone.
6) In a comeback situation act as
though you are thrilled that they
brought this problem to your at-
tention, then take care of it as
quickly as possible. Remember
that this customer has already
paid you and deserves to have
the car fixed right and without
delay.
7) Have as many payment options
available as possible. Even
though some of the credit-card
companies take a little higher
percentage from you, refusing
to accept a major credit card can
be a disaster, especially if its the
only card the customer has or
has enough room on it for the
purchase. Getting the money in
your hand without causing the
customer grief is worth the extra
point or two you might have to
pay.
The success of your business de-
pends on how much customers like
and trust you and your staff. If you
give them a good job at a fair price
in a clean facility using a pleasant
and caring manner, they will help
you to become and remain as suc-
cessful as you want to be.

Just as the retail players vary in these additional shop activities, so too do
manufacturers and distributors differ in the scope of components or remanu-

our readers will find new or alternate sources of products and, quite possi-

very technician who rebuilds transmissions has
failures, which we call comebacks. We get the
failed or improperly working unit back, diag-
nose the cause and make it right.
The entire exercise we go through on a daily basis
making repairs is based on the same set of facts: We
have to first diagnose the problem, understand the
cause of the failure, correct that cause and then certify
that the unit is working correctly and deliver the
product.
Rebuilding is not replacing parts that are broken or
worn but is a concentrated effort to correct the design

defects that are inherent in all manmade products, so
that all the new parts we are installing will not fail
again. The defects can be internal to the unit we are
working on or external in other parts of the vehicle,
such as computer control or electronic issues, which if
uncorrected will put us back to square one.
Any technician who understands the power flow
and method of operation of the unit is by nature an
accomplished detective. This is not the pursuit of law-
breakers but a need to do a root-cause failure analysis
on every unit you work on. The following case study
illustrates how important it is to thoroughly analyze

the causes of transmission failure on every unit you
work on and to be sure to verify everything you have
done on the repair whether it succeeds or results in a
comeback.
We remanufacture manual transmissions, transfer
cases and differentials and sell them to the repair in-
dustry wholesale. Our company also has a perform-
ance and racing division that provides
remanufactured and new units to professional and
amateur race teams worldwide and to the automotive
enthusiast who wants to upgrade the factory unit he
has for better performance.
Most of our attention is on the six-speed units man-
ufactured by Tremec. The factory
unit is an excellent design for the
Corvette, Camaro, Firebird,
Viper, Challenger, GTO,
Mustang, Cadillac CTS-V etc.
originally equipped for street use.
However, when you are dealing
with the performance market,
where people are operating with
much-increased horsepower and
torque demands from the engine,
you always end up reengineering
the design to accept the punish-
ment it will take.
To that end we manufacture
our own brand of six-speed trans-
missions based on the Tremec
T56, TR6060 or T56 Magnum de-
sign. The brand name is Tranzilla,
and within that brand we have
several levels of units that are all
based on the T56 and T56
Magnum design, modified for
higher horsepower and torque
and designed to live in the rac-
ing/performance environment.
The premium model is the
Tranzilla designed to handle up
to 1,200 horsepower and 1,000 lb.-
ft. of torque. These gears and
shafts use 9310 alloy, and the en-
tire gear set is redesigned to live
in races like the 24 Hours of
Daytona, with continual shifting
at up to 8,000 rpm for prolonged
periods of three to 24 hours.
The next level of unit, again
based on the Tremec T56 and T56
Magnum design, will handle 850
lb.-ft. of torque for street and
track, with the same engine-
speed levels possible. These units
will be found behind engines
with turbos, superchargers, ni-
trous-oxide systems, big-blocks instead of small-
blocks etc. that boost demand on the transmission
over stock. A huge number of hot rods and early mus-
cle cars out there are being converted to six-speeds to
offer the user a double overdrive for better mileage
and more-enjoyable cruising on the highway.
The big issue on the racing side is reliability and
durability. The unit has to work for the purpose de-
sired, and it has to last for the duration of the race
under really high-speed abuse and sometimes driver
punishment. Nobody warrants a race transmission,
but it has to get the job done or the team will quickly

move to another supplier. The cost of each race is very
high when you consider entry fees; fuel; tires; trans-
portation for the car and the whole crew; meals; lodg-
ing; and the return on investment to the sponsor.
Teams on the professional level such as the NASCAR-
owned Grand American Rolex series or the Speed
World Challenge series can spend 30 to 50 grand on
each event. If they dont finish the race because of
your product failing, the phones will light up immedi-
ately, and no one wants to disappoint a customer or
their sponsors.
Our designs have been tested in thousands of laps
at road and drag races around the world and proved
to work. There will be failures, but usually they are
driver error or results of contact with immovable
items such as walls. We do very careful root-cause
failure analysis on every unit to determine why it
failed. Most of these units will get returned to be
freshened up after every race or every second or third
race during the season. You are only as good as the
last thing you did for anybody.
Now to the failure from hell. We were contracted to
build a T56 Magnum Tranzilla for a custom-built 2010
Camaro to be used in racing and product display. The
car was equipped with an LS7 supercharged engine,
Ram dual-disc clutch, custom-built 12-bolt aluminum
independent rear-axle assembly, modified suspen-
sion, heavy-duty CV joints and shafts, and a chrome-
moly driveshaft custom built by one of the premier
driveshaft shops in the nation. The car had a torque
output of 850 lb.-ft. and produced close to 600 horse-
power at the rear wheels. The rear was supported by
custom-fabricated brackets, and the design looked ex-
cellent.
Shortly after installation the car was road-tested
and the driver felt a vibration at speed. During a se-
ries of subsequent downshifts, the driver said, the
driveline exploded. The bottom-line result was a
$70,000 insurance claim. We got all kinds of phone
calls and had a number of questions from the insur-
ance adjusters.
The damage was incredible. The transmission bell-
housing was torn off the block, and this in turn tore
the starter off the block, destroying a very expensive
engine. The transmission was cracked in half at the

extension housing and had another crack near the
shifter attachment points, the cross member was de-
stroyed, the driveshaft was in three pieces, the yoke
was broken out of the differential and the rear hous-
ing was damaged. As the transmission moved off the
block it struck the sheet metal in the tunnel, tearing
out a piece the size of a basketball, ruining the tub
and probably tweaking the frame.
We asked for the transmission to be returned to us
for inspection, and now we had a real whodunit on
our hands. The trans came back and was inspected
and photographed. Although the cases were de-
stroyed the internal gear train suffered no damage.
The mainshaft was bent, and measuring runout on a
good lathe we determined it was out in places by
more than 0.050 inch, with the start of a fracture
showing up at the bend line. This was a terrific relief,
as it proved to us the trans was not the cause of the
failure but a result.

Now was the time to make a real crime-scene in-
vestigation to put a cause to the failure. We made
many phone calls to all the people involved in the
build. In one of the photographs we saw that the
straps retaining the U-joints were spread. This con-
centrated our effort in that area, as a loose U-joint
could definitely light the fuse on this deal. It was de-
termined that the bolts were all torqued to the correct
specs and had retained their position another result,
not a cause.
Moving along, we spoke with each individual in-
volved in the steps between the installation and the
road test. One of the team members had taken the ve-
hicle for a four-wheel alignment. He remembered
having difficulty getting the car onto the alignment
rack. This was a breakthrough clue. He said that when
he was driving it onto the alignment rack the car
would not move and I had to gun the hell out of it to
get it up on the rack. He had the same issue coming
off the rack. Now we had the beginning of the answer.
We went back to the driveshaft and examined it
carefully, and there was the answer. We called the
alignment shop and asked them, Did you use the
blue alignment rack when you did it?
The reply was, How do you know what color the
rack is?
The driveshaft looked like a barber pole with a blue
stripe corkscrewing around its length. Because of the
Camaros ride height, as the driver went up on the
rack the driveshaft bottomed out on the cross bar of
the rack, stalling the car. Instead of getting out to look
the driver just added power, forcing the car onto the
rack and making the driveshaft look like a Twizzler.
The driveshaft was now way out of line made worse
by the chrome-moly material, which although
stronger will not handle any bend or distortion.
During the road test the driveshaft went into a major
whip and distortion because of the increased speed
and destroyed the transmission, engine, differential
and driveline tunnel.
We got lucky in being able to put a cause to the fail-
ure and not being the donkey everyone could pin the
tail on. The customer got paid from the insurance
provider and ordered another unit from us as the car
is being rebuilt. The guy who drove it onto the align-
ment rack and caused the problem is now probably a
fugitive. The pictures here illustrate the damage se-
quence.
There are lessons to be learned from the story.
Uneducated people make big mistakes. Luckily, no
one was hurt and the damage can be fixed. What you
can take away from this is applicable to everyone who
works on cars. Little details can create big disasters.
We work on product every day that can put some-
ones life in danger, whether it is on the highway or
just setting a car up on the lift properly.
Take nothing for granted, and pay attention to de-
tail. When you have a failure, keep emotion out of the
equation and let your intellect work out a thorough
examination to discover the root cause. If you own the
mistake, make it right and learn from it. If you didnt
create the issue, do what you can to help fix the prob-
lem; fixing the blame never cured anything.

Chrysler Governor-Pressure Kit
This new governor-pressure kit from DNJ Components
LLC addresses reliability concerns of the governor-pres-
sure solenoid and warping of the governor-pressure body
in 42/46/47/48RE transmissions. The GM pressure-control
solenoid, serving as a governor-pressure solenoid, shows
a remarkable improvement in the reliability concerns dur-
ing normal use and will handle higher base pressures in
high-performance applica-
tions, the company said. The
6061-T6 aircraft-quality alu-
minum used in the billet man-
ufacturing process prevents
warpage of the governor
body. The new governor body,
pressure-control solenoid and
conversion harness come
completely assembled.
ZF 6HP series and 6R60-6R80 End-Plug Kit
The new K095 end-plug and pressure-regulator support-
sleeve kit for ZF 6HP series and 6R60-6R80 from Superior
Transmission Parts Inc. incorporates a self-sealing feature
to solve the problem of end-plug and sleeve wear that re-
sults in circuit leakage. The proprietary-design kits end
plugs provide a
secure seal, and
it eliminates the
problem of
cutting the
seals on the
sharp bore-clip
retainer slots,
according to
the company.
Manual Transmissions & Transfer Cases
The Gear Shop offers a full line of remanufactured manual
transmissions and transfer cases. Foreign and domestic
front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive, all-wheel-drive and
4x4 units are available with 12-, 24- or 36-month/unlimit-
ed-mileage warranties at wholesale prices. Hundreds of
remanufactured manual transmissions and transfer cases
are in stock
ready for
immediate
nationwide
shipping, the
company
said.

Dodge Cummins Impeller & Turbine
Transmission
Specialties of Aston,
Pa., has introduced
the new Dodge
Cummins impeller
and turbine. These
parts are 100% brand
new and are sold
separately, the
company said. They
will be available in
both furnace-brazed
and non-furnace-
brazed versions.
GM Center Support & Case Saver
This center support and case saver from Adapt-A-Case
makes it possible to reuse TH350, 700R4 and 4L60-E
cases in which the original lugs are damaged. The
two-piece design takes advantage of the extended case
lugs above the snap-ring groove, according to the
company. After finalizing low/reverse-clutch clearance,
install a known-good roller clutch and inner race and set
the support in
place, properly
install the
retaining ring into
the groove of the
case, and align
and set into place
the outer steel
retaining plate.
Multipurpose Driver/Installer
Arizona Transmission Machines EZ-DRIVER

allows
technicians to create more than 200 special installers for
bearings, gears,
seals, hubs and
sleeves. It
increases shop
productivity and
is truly a shop
necessity no matter
what your specialty
is, according to the
company.
EZ-DRIVER is made
in the USA and now
is available in black
oxide finish.
Trilingual OBDII, CAN & ABS Scan Tool
OTC, an SPX

brand, has introduced its new Trilingual

OBDII, CAN & ABS Scan Tool (P/N 3111) featuring access
to live data in English, Spanish and French. The tools
CodeConnect hot key connects to the on-tool OTC database
to give the most-
probable solution
from actual vehicle
fixes that have been
reported and then
verified by OTCs net-
work of ASE-certified
technicians, accord-
ing to the company.
It also provides
on-screen graphing
and user-defined
custom data lists.
4T65-E Accumulator Valve Kits
The accumulator valves respond to torque-signal influence
to feed accumulators and control clutch-apply pressure
and shift feel. Valve and bore wear can allow torque-signal,
accumulator or line pressures to exhaust, resulting in
various shift complaints. The improved designs of Sonnax
replacements establish the optimum shift control, using
upgraded material to prevent wear, the company said. Use
84754-53K (A) or 84754-57K (B) to correct 2-3 or 1-2 shift
problems in any
4T65-E unit. 3-4 shift
problems can be
addressed with
84754-55K (C) in GM
or 84754-58K (D) in
Volvo valve bodies.
727 Low-Drag Geartrain
TCS Products has introduced the 727 Sportsman Low Drag
Geartrain Assembly. Features include four enclosed
Torrington needle bearings, new front-planetary steel
spline, radial ball-bearing billet steel output support, stock
ratio 2:45/1:45, roller-bearing 1st/reverse drum and
governor-elimination sleeve, the company said. The
assembly is available in three- & four-pinion arrangements.
Use with a
manual or
trans-brake
valve body
only.

Diagnostic Scan Tool
The Launch X-431 distributed by European Exchange
enables technicians to keep
pace with the changing
automotive systems and get
dealer-level information for
domestic- and foreign-vehicle
systems, including ABS, SRS,
A/T, engine and many
systems not covered by other
scan tools, according to the
company. A built-in printer
provides a printout of DTCs
as well as live data. The X-431
comes complete with all OEM,
OBD-II and up-to-date CAN
and CAN-bus II connectors.
Aisin SL-Solenoid Tool Kit
A & Reds now offers the Aisin SL-solenoid tool kit for Aisin
five- and six-speed units AW55-50, TF60 (09G, 09M, 09K),
TR60 (09D) and TF80 (AF40-6). This tool kit from AE
Automotive Technology allows for the complete overhaul of
the Aisin five- and six-speed SL solenoids. Apart from
incorrect calibration, the
main concern with
five-speed SL solenoids
is dirt ingress. This tool
kit has been specially
designed to return the
canister to original
condition, then close
the entire solenoid,
leaving it as if it had
never been apart, the
company said.
Parts Washer
The T-0100-Partscrubber parts washer from Trans-Tool is
a high-quality American-made cleaning machine at an
affordable cost,
according to the
company. Instead of a
turntable, it uses an
expanded metal plat-
form with an array of 40
spray pipes and a
powerful seal-less
pump. The washer,
which can accommo-
date a full-size E4OD
transmission case,
comes standard with an
oil drain valve, and an
oil skimmer is optional.
New Venture 149 Remanufactured Planetary
Transforce Industries has introduced a New Venture 149
remanufactured planetary. The 149 has a very high failure
rate on the planetary because of thrust-washer failure.
Transforces reman-
ufactured planetaries
have a stationary
tabbed washer and
steel washer design
to end premature
washer failure on the
149-model
transfer-case
planetary, the
company said.

Repair-Shop Group Donates Cars
and Services to Struggling Veterans
The Auto Repair Good Guys (ARGG) Foundation
has started a new program to donate cars and auto
repairs to struggling veterans in Arizona.
The Cars for Wounded Warriors program is de-
signed to help American military personnel and their
families who have automobile-related needs and fi-
nancial hardship due to death, injury, or physical or
mental problems as a result of service in Iraq or
Afghanistan. The idea was the brainchild of Dave
Denmon of Daves Car Care in Glendale, according to
the group.
Conceived early this year, the foundation is a close-
ly knit group of Arizona auto-repair shops dedicated
to giving back to their communities by donating reha-
bilitated cars or auto repairs to families with no trans-
portation, sponsoring scholarships for deserving
students to attend auto vo-tech schools and making
contributions to select Arizona charities and worthy
causes.

prehensive offering of products and services.

firm Linsalata Capital Partners, has put the transmis-
sion-parts supplier up for sale five years after buying
the business, according to a report from Reuters.
According to sources familiar with the matter,
about five bidders most of them private equity firms
remain in the running to buy Transtar in a deal that
could be worth up to $700 million.
Transtar distributes and remanufactures automo-
tive transmission parts and produces automotive re-
finishing products.
