ABSTRACT

Typhoid fever is a systemic disease characterized by fever and abdominal pain. The
disease is caused by Salmonella typhi. This disease is in
3rd
rank out of 10 major diseases of
inpatients in hospitals in Indonesia in 2006 .
To know the diagnostic description and management of patients with typhoid fever in
Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan, a retrospective descriptive research was conducted with
case study design. The population was all medical record of Typhoid Fever patients
hospitalized in Dr. Pirngadi Hospital Medan in 2013 for 679 patients. The required samples
for 100 patients was taken with purposive sampling .
It was found the youngest age of 15 years old and the oldest 70 years, the sex ratio of
81.81 %. The highest age group ( 15-21 ) for 37 % , low ( 57-63 ) years and ( 64-70 ) years
for1 %. The main complaint of fever was for 95 %, 3 % nausea, vomiting and diarrhea 1 % .
Additional complaints of nausea 81 % , vomiting 49 % and 3 % limp . Physical examination
found typhoid tongue 52.5 % , 12.5 % flatulence . Laboratory tests 35.1 % thrombocytopenia,
leukopenia 28.5 % , 19.5 % anemia , leukocytosis of 16.9 % . Serological Widal test was 88
% positive, 3 % test positive Tubex . The complications were not recorded . RL Fluid therapy
89 %, 11 % NaCl . Oral Antibiotic Class 4 - Fluoriquinolon 65.5 % , chloramphenicol 1.8 %.
Symptomatic oral drug Paracetamol 84 % , Lapixime and Metronidazole 1 %. Average care
was 5 days, minimum 1 day and maximum of 11 days. The condition at the time of returning
home was PBJ 85%, PABS 14%, and died 1 % .
It is necessary to carry out further research to know the factors that cause patients
asking to return home by self-reqwuest (PAPS) .
