2013 BIOTECHNOLOGY

WORKSHOP presents:

Molecules Matter !
A collection of interactive lesson plans that address
content, bioethics, and inquiry while capturing student
interest. Each activity is applicable/ adaptable to
introductory biology through Advanced Placement
Biology. Activities are chosen for their level of interest,
relevance, level of inquiry, cost and usability in the high
school classroom.

Session Descriptions

Margaret Franzen from 3D Molecular Designs
Margaret is back!!
Let's Get Helical: Exploring DNA Structure/Function with Interactive Physical
Models
DNA can be viewed as either a macromolecule or as a source of genetic
information. Participants explore both features with an interactive DNA
model and a paper bioinformatics exercise focusing on the beta subunit of
hemoglobin. Participants identify the point mutation that leads to sickle cell
disease and explore the regulation of expression of fetal and adult
hemoglobin. These activities allow students to discover concepts, then learn
terminology in an approach that really sticks! You will take home the
materials necessary to do this activity with your students in your classroom.

Montoursville Science National Honor Society
In this Science Take Out Module, create a model to illustrate cell
communication. Then, they apply this model to understanding cell
communication involved in regulating blood sugar level and in nerve cell
action. You will take home the lesson plan for this activity.

Montoursville Science National Honor Society

In this Science Take Out Module, research how can genetic engineering be
used to help a child who is not growing normally. You will conduct
simulated tests to determine what is causing the childs slow growth. Then
model how genetic engineering could be used to create bacteria that
produce human growth hormone. You will take home the lesson plan for
this activity.

Montoursville Science National Honor Society

In this rich and relevant lab activity from Modern Bio, you will determine
the presence of amylase (thats right, you will be working with spit!) in
different organisms from different kingdoms and then use the amino acid
sequences from each organism to build a phylogenetic tree. You will take
home the kit that will enable you to do all THREE lab activities associated
with this kit!
