TRIANGLE CENTERS

ART FOCUS
Day 14
OBJECTIVE
Students will apply what they have learned in this unit regarding, triangles, centers,
constructions and art to their own lives. Students will create a symbol that holds special
meaning to them using one of the centers that they have learned.
STANDARDS
Common Core Content Standards:

Geometry: Congruence
10. Prove theorems about triangles. Theorems include: measures of interior angles of a triangle
sum to 180; base angles of isosceles triangles are congruent; the segment joining midpoints of
two sides of a triangle is parallel to the third side and half the length; the medians of a triangle
meet at a point; the altitudes of a triangle meet at a point.

Geometry: Congruence
Make geometric constructions.

12. Make formal geometric constructions with a variety of tools and methods (compass and
straightedge, string, reflective devices, paper folding, dynamic geometric software, etc.).
Copying a segment; copying an angle; bisecting a segment; bisecting an angle; constructing
perpendicular lines, including the perpendicular bisector of a line segment; and constructing a
line parallel to a given line through a point not on the line.

Technology standards:

1. Creativity and Innovation
Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct knowledge, and develop innovative products
and processes using technology.
b. Create original works as a means of personal or group expression
2. Communication and Collaboration
Students use digital media and environments to communicate and work collaboratively, including
at a distance, to support individual learning and contribute to the learning of others.
a. Interact, collaborate, and publish with peers, experts, or others employing a variety of digital
environments and media
b. Communicate information and ideas effectively to multiple audiences using a variety of media
and formats
5. Digital Citizenship
Students understand human, cultural, and societal issues related to technology and practice legal
and ethical behavior.
a. Advocate and practice safe, legal, and responsible use of information and technology
b. Exhibit a positive attitude toward using technology that supports collaboration, learning, and
productivity
c. Demonstrate personal responsibility for lifelong learning
ANTICIPATORY SET
Review the videos that students have posted the day before and discuss
important themes that were discussed. Also review Twitter feed to see what types of
questions and discussions occurred and answer any last questions students may have.
Students will be working on an art project. They can use a drawing app such as Paper on
a device or use paper and art supplies. Have art supplies ready for students to use.
TEACHER INSTRUCTION STUDENT WORK
Have students review the diagrams and
discussions they had the previous day.
Have students reflect on an event,
person, location or theme that has been
important to their lives.
Explain to students that they will be
using some of their diagrams to
represent their important event, person,
etc.
Tell students that they do not have to
use all parts of the triangle and center
diagrams.
Discuss with classes that the symbols
should be personal but that they should
not pressure one another about the
context of the symbol if their classmates
do not wish to talk about it.
Have students post the symbol to the
Pinterest board and write a description
about the symbol.
Description may include personal
background but it is not necessary.
Description should describe what types
of connotation the symbol has and why
they chose the specific center, triangle
shape, color etc.
Students will choose an important
person, event, or theme to use for a
symbol.

Students are free to manipulate the
diagram however they want. Students
are free to color in certain sections,
exaggerate elements and so on.
Along with the symbol, students will
write a description explaining the
meaning of the symbol and how they feel
the symbol represents the person,
theme, etc.
Students do not have to divulge personal
information. Encourage students to be
vague about details if they are not
comfortable with sharing information.

Students will post a screen capture or
photo of their symbol to their Pinterest
along with the description.

STUDENT PRODUCTS
Students will create an original symbol that has special meaning to them and will
post it on Instagram.
ADDITIONAL MATERIALS
IPads, computers
