Transform boundaries, i n whi ch two pl ates sl i de past one
another l ateral ly. Earthquakes, vol cani c acti vity, mountai n-
bui ldi ng, and oceani c trench formation can occur al ong these
pl ate boundaries. The tectoni c pl ates ri de on top of the
asthenosphere, the sol i d but l ess- viscous part of the upper
mantl e that can fl ow and move al ong wi th the pl ates, and
