Dear Friends of Autism Awareness,

Autism Artreach was founded to raise autism awareness in the community and to help fund support services
for our neighbors, colleagues, family members, and friends affected by autism. All proceeds from Autism
Artreach 2014 will benefit the Arc of Frederick County and the Autism Society of America, Frederick Chapter.
These two local organizations provide support services for individuals affected by ASD and their families. This
years theme is Bridges to Understanding and aims to help people better understand the daily struggles faced
by individuals with autism and their families.

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) affects 1 in 68 children born in the United States, according to a
recent report released by the Center for Disease Control. It is the fastest growing developmental disability in
the country with a 1,148% growth rate, but is one of the most underfunded health concerns. Scientists have
yet to determine what causes ASD, and there is currently no cure. ASD includes a wide range of
developmental disabilities. Individuals with ASD have difficulty with verbal and non-verbal communication,
social interaction and leisure activities. Individuals with ASD may have repetitive or unusual use of language
and a limited ability to initiate or sustain a conversation. They may have difficulty controlling their
emotions. There is an absence or impairment of imaginative and social play. Because of the range of
difficulties, daily life is not easy for people with ASD and their families.

The Autism Awareness Wall is part of this years Bridges to Understanding project. The wall consists of tiles
created by local artists and community members, both with and without ASD. As a member of the Frederick
community, you can help us build autism awareness one piece of art at a time by purchasing or sponsoring a
tile, or creating one of your own. Any and all forms of support towards this project are greatly appreciated.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we can answer any further questions regarding the project and how you
and your family can help.

Thank you again.

Sincerely,

Peggy Richman Karen Farrow
