Why? Purpose
Drive and fuel the passions and dreams of a new generation of Chinese student entrepreneurs.
Build an exemplifying model of global entrepreneurship learning at ShangHai Tech, School of
Management and Entrepreneurship:

! Empower student entrepreneurs to bring their ideas to life and market.
! Challenge student entrepreneurs with real-world entrepreneurship problems.
! Connect Chinese student entrepreneurs with global student entrepreneurs.
Who? Intended Audience
Primary audience:
Shanghai Tech undergraduate and graduate students (possible expansion to national
coverage)
HYSTA Community members
o VCs, Chinese and American corporations
o Successful entrepreneurs
o Startups with a business focus in China or U.S.
Global student entrepreneurs
Secondary audience:
International entrepreneurial institutions

What? Description
The initiative can take off with three programs based on two student levels of undergraduate and
graduate studies.

! Student-entrepreneur mentorship program
o Mentors are critical to entrepreneurs and all individuals professional and
personal growth. By establishing a mentorship program, the young entrepreneurs
will learn from their mentors the foundations and necessary skills of how to
become a successful entrepreneur.

Model one:
o One-month mentorship- provide wisdom and guidance to Shanghai Tech
emerging student entrepreneurs
" No. of meetings per month: 4
" No. of mentors: 4 (criteria: successful venture capitalists, lawyers,
entrepreneurs, and skill trainers)
" No. of students per session: 10
" Length of each meeting: 1 hour
" The meetings can be held every month or every quarter depending on the
availability of the mentors time
" Students graduated from the mentorship program can sign up to be micro
mentors who offer advice to new or other students who are not admitted
to the mentorship program.

Model Two:
o Monthly mentorship available
o Appoint must be made prior to the set mentorship dates
o Each student gets 20-30 mentorship time window

o Mentors are selected from a combination of faculties and real-business world
entrepreneurs.

! Student startup contest
o Criteria: open to students of all majors at Shanghai Tech.
o Chosen students will automatically be enrolled in the mentorship program and
work with an assigned mentor on their startup ideas
o Frequency: once a year
o Suggested time: during summer vacationJuly of each year
o Suggested place: China or Silicon Valley
o Scope: 30-50 startups for initial competition
o Finalists: select 5-10 semifinalists to compete for finalists
o Reward: financial reward, corporate service reward, etc.
o For finalists, HYSTA and Shanghai Tech will work together to promote them to
join international student entrepreneur contests or other promotions appropriate.

! Student entrepreneurial internships
o Criteria: open to all students but students who finished the mentorship program
or participated in the contest will have priorities
o Target internship partners: established startups that have secured funding of at
least $1M (or 1M RMB if the company is located in China) and with a total
number of employees of less than 50 but greater than 3.
o Internship country: the internships can either take place in China or in Silicon
Valley

Potential Risks
This is designed to be an on-going cooperation; therefore, dedicated personnel and services are
needed to be in place to ensure deliverables.
! HYSTAs current structure is not suitable for carrying out collaborations that will spread
more than two months
! Mentors may not be always available
! Students may not be used to the mentoring styles
! Students may not participate in an enthusiastic fashion as expected
! Startup projects may not be enough and ideal to hold the contest
! Internship companies may not be always available and ideal
