Nursing
Definition: Nursing is the protection,
promotion & optimization of health &
abilities,prevention of illness & injury,
alleviation of suffering through the diagnosis
and treatment of human response, & advocacy in the care
of individuals, families, communities & populations (ANA, 2014)
Focus: Provision of quality care, advocacy & protection of
patient rights, empowering patients to be autonomous, BSN
nurses have additional responsibility of leadership
Theory: Purpose of nursing theories in education are to provide
general focus for curriculum design & guide curricular decision
making. Nursing theory aims to
describe, predict & explain the phenomenon of
nursing; it should provide the foundations of
nursing practice, help to generate further
knowledge & indicate in which direction
nursing should develop in the future.

Nursing Education
Integration of theory into nursing education allows
baccalaureate nurse educators to more effectively
disseminate knowledge to students by using a set of
known principles to guide the learning process. These
compatible theories and frameworks provide a vehicle to
teach the wide-ranging skills that BSN students must
master to become leaders in the world of professional
nursing.

Instructionism - Learning is a result of
being taught. Emphasis is on individual
testing and individual skill.
Adult Learning Theory -
Educators are encouraged to ask
probing questions, to give
resources, and to facilitate
learning in groups.
Caring Framework for Excellence in
Nursing Education & Caring Science
Theory - Teaching practice excellence,
teaching scholarship, and teaching leadership
is exemplified in this framework where the
ethic and philosophy of caring is dominant.

Constructivism & Humanism - Use collaboration to
build skills in critical thinking, clinical reasoning, and
communication. Students are encouraged in self-direction
and independence. Learners use experiences to build a
foundation of knowledge.

Dr. Kolbs Theory (framework)
Learning is a continuous process and knowledge
is created by transforming experience into
existing cognitive frameworks thus changing the
way a person thinks and behaves. Dr. Kolbs
theory is significant in critical thinking
integration, in simulation learning, and in nursing
practice.

Education theory is the theory of the purpose,
application and interpretation of education and
learning. It is largely an umbrella term, being
comprised of a number of theories, rather than a single
explanation of how we learn and how we should teach.
Rather, it is affected by several factors, including
theoretical perspective and epistemological position.
There is no one, clear, universal explanation of how we
learn and subsequent guidebook as to how we should
teach. Rather, there are a range of theories, each with
their background in a different psychological and
epistemological tradition. To understand learning then,
we have to understand the theories, and the rationale
behind them.
