Hairstyling Course Outline



Grade 10A Introduction to Hairstyling
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on an introduction to hairstyling. Students are introduced to safety
and sanitation, basic tools and equipment, the operation of a hairstyling salon and the workings
of the hairstyling industry, and introductory hairstyling skills.


Grade 10B Basic Hairstyling
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on the properties of the hair and scalp, wet hair styling techniques,
shampoos, conditioners, rinses, and treatments.


Grade 10C Basic Haircutting and Thermal Styling
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on anatomy and an introduction to haircutting and thermal styling.


Grade 10D Related Salon Services
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on manicures, facials, make-up, superfluous hair removal, sun
tanning, and an introduction to the practical application of perm wrapping and hair colour
techniques.


Grade 11A Intermediate Haircutting and Barbering Techniques
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on barbering techniques, and the continued development of
haircutting techniques


Grade 11B Hair Colouring
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on an introduction to colour theory and the continued development
of hair colouring.


Grade 11C Intermediate Hairstyling and Artificial Hair
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on wigs and hair enhancements and the continued development of
wet and thermal hairstyling techniques.
Grade 11D Chemical Texture Services
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on the theory of permanent waving and chemical relaxing, as well
as the practical application of permanent waving.


Grade 12A Advanced Hairstyling and Colouring
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on special effects hair colour, corrective colour, as well as advanced
wet and thermal hairstyling techniques.


Grade 12B Advanced Haircutting and Chemical Texture Services
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on advanced haircutting and permanent waving techniques, as well
as the practical application of chemical hair relaxers.


Grade 12C Salon Operation
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on the business operations of a hair salon, as well as the creation of
a resume and career portfolio


Grade 12D Certificate Preparation
Learning time: 110 hours
Curriculum content focuses on preparing students to successfully complete their Provincial
Examination.



*Each block of 110 hours represents a credit. There are 12 blocks which equal 12 credits over the
1400 hour requirement. *Could use the remaining 80 hours as a co-op education course, hair
shows, or volunteering at a hair salon.

The students evaluation is based on the following criteria:
1) Theory Work tests, worksheets and projects 20%
2) Practical Work mannequin work and clients 50%
3) Final Exam (theory & practical) 30%
