OVERVIEW OF ROTATION
The Great Ormond Street/Royal London hospitals higher training scheme in Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry is the largest scheme in London and one of the largest in the UK, ith the e!"i#alent of $%
f"ll&time posts' (t offers a ide range of training opport"nities across Central, )orth and *ast London,
as ell as one post in +est London' There are a large n"m,er of -o,s a#aila,le in general CA./S,
adolescent mental health teams, paediatric liaison, inpatient "nits, as ell as a n"m,er of specialist
posts, incl"ding ne"rode#elopmental disorders and eating disorders' The training allos the
opport"nity to gain e0perience across all areas of the c"rric"l"m, incl"ding core conditions in child
and adolescent psychiatry, as ell as e0perience of psychopharmacology and a range of
psychological therapies' The scheme also co#ers an area ith an ethnically di#erse pop"lation,
alloing trainees to gain e0perience of or1ing ith children and families from a ide #ariety of social
and c"lt"ral ,ac1gro"nds'
To Training Programme 2irectors 3TP2s4, 2r 5on Goldin and 2r Rafi1 Refaat, o#ersee the scheme'
6o"r ed"cational s"per#isors s"pport them7 trainees are allocated to an ed"cational s"per#isor ho
o#ersees their training, meeting together on a termly ,asis' The ed"cational s"per#isors s"pport
trainees to identify and achie#e their learning o,-ecti#es, ens"re they meet the needs of the
c"rric"l"m ,y the end of their training, and de#elop their areas of interest ithin the field' (n addition,
each trainee ill ha#e a clinical s"per#isor for each post' There is also a Training Committee ho
meets on a monthly ,asis ith the TP2s, ed"cational s"per#isors and trainee reps to ens"re ongoing
high !"ality training across the rotation'

Teaching is acti#ely enco"raged across the scheme and all posts offer opport"nities to gain teaching
e0perience, incl"ding to medical st"dents on placement as ell as teaching seminars and lect"res to
a ide range of a"diences'
RESEARCH AND AUDIT
Pro#ision and training is made for all trainees to complete the re!"ired c"rric"l"m competency of a
literat"re re#ie of a p",lisha,le standard ithin their first year' 6olloing this, all trainees are
enco"raged to participate in a research pro-ect to de#elop their research interests and s1ills and are
alloed dedicated research time, "s"ally one day per ee1' All posts are s"ita,ly timeta,led to allo
for this altho"gh the choice of day ill ha#e to ,e made ith the trainee8s clinical s"per#isor' The
scheme has a Research Coordinator 32r Tr"die Rosso"4, ho ta1es an o#er#ie of all trainees9

The team also offers cons"ltation to local ser#ices' The team incl"des7 a Cons"ltant Clinical
Psychologist and < other Clinical Psychologists, a part&time /igher Trainee in Child and Adolescent
Psychiatry, a 6amily Therapist, a )"rse Specialist, dietitian, speech and lang"age therapist,
occ"pational therapist and play specialist' The trainee carries o"t detailed assessments of children8s
feeding pro,lems ith their parents, gi#es inp"t to the m"ltidisciplinary team disc"ssion and pro#ides
