Abstract

The prominence of airport passenger security screening has increased dramatically in recent
years in Nigeria. This is in response to the growing security threats in the country and across the
regions of the world. As a reaction to the threat situation, large investments in modern security
technology have been made. These include the use of x-ray screening equipment, metal detector
equipment and explosive detector machines. However, the most sophisticated and expensive
equipment would be of limited value if the humans who operate it are not adequately trained to
perform their task accurately and effectively. Hence, this study investigated the effectiveness of
passenger screening techniques at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja.
The methodological approach employed was through questionnaire administration to mainly
screening operators at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport (NAIA), Abuja and the data from
thiese responses were collated and analyzed accordingly using charts and the Mann Whitney U-
test statistical technique. and on board the aircraft.
The study also identified issues affecting proper implementation of effective screening operation
at NAIA, Abuja and proffers solution that would reduce security vulnerabilities.
