THE INFLUENCE OF ENVIRONMENT THERAPY ON THE


REDUCTION OF THE LEVEL OF DEPENDENCE IN ELDERLY
WITH DEPRESSION

Aging process is a natural phenomenon occurring in each individual. Most of
aged individuals or elderly with depression have no willingness to take care themselves,
so that in fulfilling their daily needs they require helps from others. If this is not
overcome immediately, their dependence to other individuals will be higher. The
objective of this study was to investigate the influence of environment treated at Tresna
olk !ome "lderly, Tulungagung.
This study used #uasi$"%perimental desing, &opulation was all elderly with
certain level of dependence due to depression treated at Tresna olk !ome "lderly,
Tulungagung, from 'anuary to ebruary ())*. +ample comprised (, individuals who met
the inclusion criteria. They were divided into ( group, i.e, treatment and control groups,
each comprising -( individuals.The independent variable in this study was environment
therapy. The dependent variables were depression and level of dependence.. .ata were
collected /eck .epression Inventory and A.01s /arthel Inde%. .ata were analy2ed
using 3ilco%on statistical test with significance level of p 4 ).)*.
5esults revealed the presence of influence in treatment and control groups. In
treatment group the level of dependence due to depression had significance level of
p 6 ).))(, while that in control group was p 6 ).7-8. It was found that environment
therapy is effective in affecting the reduction of the level of dependence in depressive
elderly. The shortcomings of this study were the limited number of samples and the
author1s lack of communication skill to the elderly, which produced less accurate results.
