Celeste Corcoran lost both of her legs in

explosions at the Marathon finish line while
waiting for her sister to finish the race. She was
there with her 18-year-old daughter Sydney.
Sydney's legs were also injured in the explosion,
though she did not require amputation.
Now, she has joined with dozens of other
amputees to learn how to walk, run and play on
prosthetic legs at a clinic for victims of the Boston
Marathon bombing and other amputees at the
Harvard athletic fields.

"I just want to be able to do the things that I did before," Corcoran said. "So many
people have my back, I feel like I can do it. I'm trying my hardest to enjoy being alive."
Corcoran hopes to one day be able to run a 5k race on her prosthetic legs.

News highlights

As these victims and others strive to move forward with their lives, a group in
Massachusetts has organized an event to honor the first responders who helped save
lives at the April 15 attacks, according to Boston.com
(http://www.boston.com/news/local/massachusetts/2013/10/08/grouphonor-boston-marathon-firstresponders/wT7cWVMVs20opEYTr0E1LI/story.html).
The Hundred Club of Mass. Inc. will also recognize MIT Officer Sean Collier and MBTA
Officer Richard Donohue for bravery. Collier was killed by the bombing suspects, while
Donohue was shot and critically injured during a police showdown with the suspects in
Watertown, Mass.
But the effects of the blast extend beyond those injured at the finish line. Security is
being tightened at the upcoming Ironman World Championship on the Big Island of
Hawaii's Kona Coast this Saturday.
Pacific Business News
(http://www.bizjournals.com/pacific/blog/morning_call/2013/10/ironmanofficials-in-hawaii-tighten.html) reports that race officials are banning backpacks
and asking spectators to leave bags at home and report suspicious activity along the
race course.
