Solving Systems of Linear Equations
Test Directions: Make sure to read each question carefully and answer thoroughly. If you have a
question while taking the assessment you may raise your hand and ask me. Do not ask any of
your classmates. You may not use your calculator on this assessment. Remember to follow our
testing procedures and work silently. When you finish raise your hand and I will come pick up
your test. Until every student is finished you may silently read a book.

For questions number 1-3 solve the systems of linear equations by using the graphing method.
Each question will be worth a total of 3 points. Each correct answer will be worth 1 point. Your
work is worth 2 points so SHOW YOUR WORK. Draw a box around your answer.

1. y = 4x + 3
y = -x - 2

2. y = 3x 4
y = -

x + 3

3. y +2x = 5
y x = -1

For questions number 4-6 solve the systems of linear equations by using the substitution method.
Each question will be worth a total of 3 points. Each correct answer will be worth 1 point. Your
work is worth 2 points so SHOW YOUR WORK. Draw a box around your answer.

4. x + 6y = 32
x + 3y = 17

5. 3x 3y = -3
y = 5x 3

6. 2x + y = 20
6x 5y = 12

For questions number 7-9 solve the systems of linear equations by using the elimination method.
Each question will be worth a total of 3 points. Each correct answer will be worth 1 point. Your
work is worth 2 points so SHOW YOUR WORK. Draw a box around your answer.

7. x y = 11
2x + y =19

8. 4x + 5y = 37
2x +3y = 21

9. 5x = -4y 30
3x 9y = -18

For questions number 10-12 solve the systems of linear equations by using the method of your
choice. Each question will be worth a total of 4 points. Labeling what method you are using is
worth 1 point. Each correct answer will be worth 1 point. Your work is worth 2 points so SHOW
YOUR WORK. Draw a box around your answer.

10. The admission fee at a small fair is $2.00 for children and $4.00 for adults. On a certain day,
200 people enter the fair and $600 is collected. How many children and how many adults
attended?

11. If 4 apples and 2 oranges equals $1 and 2 apples and 3 orange equals $0.70, how much does
each apple and each orange cost?

12. Kristin spent $131 on shirts. Fancy shirts cost $28 and plain shirts cost $15. If she bought a
total of 7 then how many of each kind did she buy?

E. Over 1 hour

Plan for Scoring/Grading Assessment

I will be the one scoring the assessment. I will return it to students on Monday after the
weekend, which is three days after the students take it on a Friday. The grade they earned will be
on the online grading site Monday morning before school starts.

The outcomes will be communicated by the online grading system, the returning of the
tests, emails, and meetings. Parents, students, and administration will all be able to see the results
on the grading website. I will return the tests to the students. When a test like this one is
administered I will email parents to let them know and also tell them when the grade will be
posted. The email will include the date that students receive their tests so that parents are
knowledgeable of when the test can be brought home for them to see. When parents, students, or
administration have further questions that they would like to ask in person I would have a
meeting.

Next, I will take the data from the test and construct graphs/charts/tables. From this I can
see if anything needs to be retaught and if any student is struggling. I will determine how I need
to change my teaching strategies to better teach my students. I will also be able to see the
positive results of student understanding.
