Program Notes

Five Fragments was composed for the 2014 Performance 20/20 Prism Concert at the Hartt
School of Music. it consists of five short musical fragments similar to !agatelles e"ploring
relationships and differences of the dou!le !ass and o!oe. #he piece !egins in a ne!ulous and dar$
atmosphere and as each fragment progresses the structure !ecomes less free and more rigid.
#his piece was inspired !% &onald Martino's 1()4 composition for the same instrumentation
called Cinque Frammenti. Martino's wor$ is related to the Hartt School in a wa% that * found inspiring+
it was composed for !assist ,ertram #uret-$% a former Hartt School student and teacher and o!oist
.osef Mar". #he recording of Cinque Frammenti was done in the ,liss Music /oom in the same %ear.
M% own Five Fragments is an homage to the Hartt School and the musicians and composers
who made it what it is toda% and to e"press m% gratitude to !e a part of it.
