~Welcome to United States History II~

Course Description: A passing grade in this course is required in order to graduate. Course content will draw from social,
cultural, political, and economic issues important to our nation's growth from the industrialization through the present.
Emphasis will be placed on understanding the relationship between past and present and an understanding of historical
concepts. Major topics of study will include: urbanization and immigration, progressivism, Americas role as a world
power, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and the Vietnam War.
Students will be asked to complete a variety of long and short-term assignments both in class and at home. While
most assignments will require reading and writing, others will utilize different learning styles and abilities.

Classroom policies and procedures

1. All Silver Lake Regional High School policies, as outlined in the student handbook, will be followed at all times.

2. Please place all trash scrap paper into the trash barrel. Do not leave anything on your desk or on the floor when you
leave.

3. Class time is very valuable. Please go to the restroom, your locker, the attendance office, etc. between classes or during
lunch.

4. You are expected to come to class with the following materials.
-a pen/pencil
-your agenda
-3 ring binder with a notebook and all class handouts
-homework assignments or projects that are due

*** Where appropriate, you will be allowed to use your own mobile device (laptop, cell phone, iPad, tablet, etc) for
note-taking, assisting with in-class assignments, group projects, etc.

Make-up work: Missing a class is not an excuse for not completing assignments. It is your responsibility to find out what
you missed and schedule a time to make up any tests or quizzes after school. I recommend that you make arrangements to
complete all work as soon as possible upon your return to class. You will have 2 weeks to make up missed tests or
quizzes. Please see me in the event of extenuating circumstances.

Homework: Homework will be given most nights and is a large portion of your term grade. If you complete homework
assignments on a regular basis, you are more likely to succeed in class. You will be able to use your homework
assignments on all homework quizzes. Homework quizzes WILL NOT be announced ahead of time.

Be present, be prepared, be positive, be enthusiastic, be respectful!

**PLEASE NOTE
Except in the case of absence, I do not give any credit for late homework assignments. I do accept late essays,
projects, and other graded assignments, however you will lose points each day the assignment is late. (Check each
individual assignments rubric for more specific information.)
Except in the case of absence, if a homework quiz is given you are expected to take the quiz whether you
completed the assignment or not.
MOST IMPORTANTLY: Homework question sheets are study guides for the unit test!!!!

Extra Credit: Opportunities for extra credit will be few and far between. You are expected to take your daily work
seriously at all times.

Academic Integrity
Written work on all course assignments must be done individually. This includes, but is not limited to, homework
questions or problems, lab reports, essays, and term papers. In general, it is acceptable to seek help and discuss
assignments with your peers, but when you are ready to formulate your written response, this must be done on your own.
This is the difference between working together and copying. Copying from another source, such as another students
work or information found on the internet, without citing that source, is plagiarism. Students caught plagiarizing will be
dealt with as outlined on page 40 of the Student Handbook under the section Academic Dishonesty.

Grades: Grades will be determined on a point system. All assignments will be given an appropriate point value based on
the following scale:

Point values for all assignments will be announced ahead of time.
Class work/ homework/ homework quizzes 5-25 points
Major quizzes/ web quests/ projects 25-75 points
Tests/ projects/ extended homework assignments 75-300 points

Term grades will be determined by adding up the total points earned and dividing that number by the total possible points
available.

Parents/ Guardians: If you have access to the parent portal on Power School, please keep in mind that the grade
displayed is a snapshot in time, and does not necessarily reflect all assignments given up to that point. As you already
know and understand, some assignments take longer to grade than others. If you still have a question about a grade after
speaking with your child, please do not hesitate to call or e-mail me. My e-mail address is crekowski@slrsd.org, my
voicemail extension is 2516.
