What is Flu.Smart.?

Flu.Smart. is a policy proposal that aims to reshape legislation that affects public
health preparedness prior to a flu pandemic in the northeastern Illinois region.

Why is Flu.Smart. important?

All county health departments develop their own pandemic influenza
preparedness and response plan, however it is within the regions best interest to
develop a regional unified plan to prevent, protect, respond to, mitigate, prepare
for, and recover from an influenza pandemic within entire region.

What are the goals of Flu.Smart.?
Increase uniform preparedness planning efforts amongst the region for
pandemic influenza
Build capacity at the regional-level to address the scarce influenza vaccine
issues in particular areas
What are the objectives of Flu.Smart.?
Increase awareness of the benefits to a regional pandemic influenza response
plan
Engage regions that had inadequate vaccine supply to immunize their
community within county
Who will Flu.Smart. effect?

The northeastern Illinois region is composed of a total of seven counties: Cook,
DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry, and Will.

How will Flu.Smart. work?

Flu.Smart. is an amendment to Special Districts (70 ILCS 1707/15) Regional
Planning Act. The goal of the amendment is to create a Public Health
Preparedness Committee with the responsibility of recommending specialized
planning services. The committee shall consist of members from each of the
designated counties.
