2.) Suppose in 2000, a country recycled 69.9 million tons of solid waste. In
2004, the figure grew to 74.2 million tons. Let N(t) represent the number of
tons recycled, in millions, and t the number of years since 2000.
a.) Find a linear function that fits the data
b.) Use the function part (a) to predict the amount recycled in 2020.


a.) 74.2/69.9= 1.062
N(t)= 1.062t + 69.9

b.) N(t)= 1.062(2020) + 69.9


7.) Find the intercepts. Then graph by using the intercepts, if possible.

y=1/5x + 1! Therefore the slope is 1/5 and the y-intercept is 1.

To graph, start at the y-intercept, which is 1. Then, follow
the slope (rise over run) to rise up 1 (since it is positive) and
to the right 5 (since it is also positive).

However, in this answer MyMathLab graphs the slope as -1/-
5, which is another coordinate of the graph becase -1/-5 also
equals 1/5 since two positives equal a negative.

In order to determine f(-2), find the -2 which
corresponds to the x-axis. Then, follow the -2
coordinate up until it hits its corresponding y-
coordinate, which is 2. Therefore, f(-2)=2.
b.) Choose the correct domain.
Domain refers to input values, or values of x. In this
graph, the x-values are: -6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0. This is clear by the
presence of a dot marking a coordinate at each spot with the corresponding
x-value. So the domain is {-6, -5, -4, -3, -2, -1, 0}.
c.) What is the set of all x-value(s) for which f(x)=4
Since 4 is the largest y value, the x-values are that of the domain, which is
{-6, 0}.
d.) Choose the correct range
The range refers to output values or values of y. In this graph, the y-values
are: 1, 2, 3, 4. This can be seen be the fact there is a dot indicating
coordinates with the aforementioned y-values. Therefore, the range is {1,
2, 3, 4}.


10.) Find an equation of the line containing the following points. Write your
final answer as a linear function in slope-intercept form:
(-2, -3) and (-8, -1)
First, find the slope using the equation y

Due to the absence of a greater than or equal to or less than or equal to sign, the lines
drawn on the graph will be dotted.

Then, treat each inequality as if it were an equation, temporarily:
x = 1! Since the equation is written as an x equals, I automatically know that the line
is vertical. Therefore, I plot the y-intercept ( 1) and due to the lack of slope (slope=0)
plot another point on the same line.
y = -2x+4! This equation is written in slope-intercept form, so I can graph it easily by
identifying the y-intercept (4) and using the slope -2/1 to move down 2 and to the right
one spot to find my line.

Once the lines are draw, resume focus on the inequalities and use Test Points to see
where to shade within the graph. For example, use the points (-4, 4) and plug into the
inequalities:

-4 > 1 ! This isnt true, so I shade away from -4.

4 < -2(-4)+4= 4< 4 ! Since there is no equal to in this problem, this is not true either
which means I shade away from (-4, 4).

As a result, I end up with a graph like this:











12.) Write an equation of the line containing the point (5, -6) and
perpendicular to the line 3x-y= 3.
First, get the equation in slope-intercept form
3x-y=3
-3x -3x
-y= -3x+3

y= 3x-3 ! The slope of this equation is 3/1, but the perpendicular slope is -1/3

Use point slope form to find the equation
