English 12 Mini Unit Overview
Main goals of unit:
Students need to:
- speak, listen, interpret and analyze texts.
- examine and compare ideas among texts, create personal responses,
synthesize and extend thinking by transforming existing ideas and
information.
- set goals and evaluate their own progress.
- comprehend ideas and form in visual texts, context and structure in
oral language, and have exposure to a variety of poem forms.
- Additionally students have to be prepared for the provincial
exam, with knowledge of poetic terms and devices
Prior knowledge:
As grade 12s, students should be coming to this
unit with a strong understanding of literary
devices, reading skills, and familiarity with poetic
forms.

To assess prior knowledge there will be a short
re-introduction to poetry through the analysis of
pop music, as well as a poetry autobiography,
and opportunity to share lists of poetic devices
that students need to brush up on.
Big idea: Provide students with a deeper understanding of language and how it can be used to play, express emotion, create
ambiguity, and make meaning.
