Energy supply is increasingly becoming a critical factor for welfare, development and social

stability. Currently the main source of energy in most parts of the world is fossil fuel, but this
has resulted in various environmental challenges due to activities involved in its sourcing and
processing. In many countries, the supply is insufficient, too expensive and the demand is
increasing due to overall population inclination and technological changes. In case of Nigeria
which for now is rich in fossil fuel, there is great fear that someday the fossil fuel will be
exhausted. If this happens without alternative source, the nations economy will be affected
as this serve as the main drive of the economy. Thus, there is a greater demand for alternative
sources of fuel in order to meet the growing demands. Biofuels has however been report to be
important in this regard.
Currently in Nigeria, there is research into plants as a potential source of this biofuel.
However, several drawbacks have been reported for this first generation biofuel model. My
interest is therefore to join the current trend of research into the use of algae in biofuel
production. The application of this to my country, Nigeria, will be feasible considering the
large biomass of algae and favourable climatic condition.
Doing my Master degree in one of the top universities in UK, has given me the opportunity of
the knowing the advantage of doing PhD in your university (being one of the best universities
in UK too). The calibre and depth of knowledge of lecturers in the UK is matchless with any
of other universities many other countries. I know this will enhance a better impartation of
knowledge.
As stated in my application, I am currently studying in University College London (M.Sc.
Biochemical Engineering). This has exposed me to many things far beyond description about
the education in the UK. I also hold two degrees in Biochemistry (B.Sc. and M.Sc.), the first
with a First Class Hons. and the second with a Distinction. My educational background will
not only enable me to cope well but will also enhance my performance.
I am currently sponsored by Federal Government of Nigeria (M.Sc). The sponsorship may be
extended to PhD. However, I will also apply for any of the university scholarship I am
eligible for.
