Minutes October 21 & 22, 2013, (ED Conference Room)

Meeting Called By: April Koehler Recorder: Alison Neet
Agenda Items Topic Discussions/Recommendations/Actions
1. Kelly (From
Abbott)
Istat Hints
Overall, doing very well with Istats
Following issues observed
Not filling the tube with blood. Must be done or risk getting false positive. If not able to fill send to lab to mix
Not mixing correctly. Suggestion is to use figure 8 motion 10 times. If you have to put sample down after mixing in order to
grab paperwork or anything else, re-mix as the red blood cells settle at the bottom, again causing false positive.
Dispense a couple drops from tip before putting blood into cartridge.
Dont touch the metal sensors in the cartridge. Hold by the sides.
Scan the cartridge package to avoid code 69 error
Remember to enter sample type to avoid code 95 error
If you get star outs, first re-run test here, or send to lab
Reminder: if you have a sickle cell patient you cannot use Chem 8. RNs might have to remind Docs if they forget and request it.
Jenn Comer will be making cards for the Computers and Istat stations which show Lab value ranges and cover whether to send to
lab, or repeat for Chem 8s.

4. April Koehler RPMs Update
4 at this time, holding on others in order to give time to implement the current ones:
Team NursingNov rollout
Front EndRollout soon with surge plan starting immediately. Guide is with the CN and involves South docs helping in the
front covering 15 minute shifts. More education is coming for the Docs to help with Front end/Intake initiative. Also
training Techs to help in front end. December schedule will be reworked for Doc staff.
CDUEducating Docs how to work with CDU, and how to move patients out instead of holding them. Other initiatives are
being looked at to move Psych patients from CDU to other facilities. UCH may be buying Psych beds at Denver Health to
help move psych patients to better environment for extended care. Getting another case manager to increase coverage for
patient navigation for CDU.
Communication with outside providersPrimarily for CTAs and Physicians. They need more communication with
providers. Work flow change primarily for CTAs
5. April Koehler NDNQI/EOS
Survey
Results of survey brought two issues to focus on for the year:
Staff doesnt feel involved in decision making processplease come to RPMs. That is why there has been such focus on
making sure you know about them, because changes are being made in these meetings and your voice is being heard
Not enough staff: 3 more techs, 1 more PSL, 7 more nurses along with adding 3-3 shift will improve situation. Also a 3p1a
shift for a PA/NP or doc Fellow will be coming to cover Mon-Wed to help in front. CNs can ask Michael Yaron for access to
web schedule/doodle pull in order to know staff for any given shift.
6. April Koehler Deceased Patient
Pathway
Packets are now color coded for Deceased Patient Pathway and Blood Exposure packets
For blood exposure: blood should be sent from source instead of it coming down with patient, which is education for upstairs and
the policy will rollout to hospital from HR which means it will take a little longer. If blood is sent down with patient much put in
order
7. April Koehler Scrubs Survey Color choice for RNs: Royal or Navy Blue: Rollout will be Jan-Feb. Must buy through vendor. Hospital will pay for first two.
Techs survey will follow shortly
8. Brandi
Schimpf

Force
