Course Description
This yearlong course is divided into ENG III A and ENG III B. The class provides a
chronological survey of American literature with emphasis on the Common Core
Standards for English Language Arts and ACTs Career/College Readiness Standards.
Students will study literary terms and techniques in their analysis of American literature
and apply these skills within their own writing. Students will study various genres, with
emphasis on supplementary novels that provide historical and sociological background.
Evaluation takes place using a variety of methods, including scored discussions, oral
presentations, projects, tests, critical analysis papers, on demand items, and creative
writing. Students will receive instruction in the refinement of grammar and vocabulary,
with attention given to standardized test preparation.
Required Reading Material
Students are responsible for maintaining the condition of their textbooks and other
reading materials. Replacement costs are listed below.

Writing
Students will write routinely over extended time frames (time for research, reflection, and
revision) and shorter time frames (a single sitting or a day or two) for a range of tasks,
purposes, and audiences. All writing should adhere to MLA guidelines for formatting
and citation. Any plagiarized work will receive a grade of 0. Types of writings may
include, but are not limited to: expressive texts, informational/explanatory writing,
responses to literature, argumentative writing, narrative writing, and workplace writing.

The two major assignments include:
ENGLISH III Aone informational/explanatory essay
ENGLISH III Bone research-based argumentative essay

Language Skills
Language is divided up in the following way:
ENGLISH III AInstruction in all language standards listed in the progressive
skills.
ENGLISH III BRefinement of language skills as needed in conjunction with
ACT prep.
Course Grading
Mr. Edwards uses the Boyle County High School grading scale.
A 90-100
B 80-90
C 70-80
F below 70

BCHS GRADING POLICY for ENG III A and B: *If a student fails one section but has a
passing cumulative average at the end of the school year then the student will earn .5
credit for each section (A & B). The recovered .5 credit will be issued with a 70%.

Other rules to manage the classroom will be given in class by Mr. Edwards at the
beginning of the course and throughout the school year.
Classroom Policies
Course Website
Mr. Edwards maintains a course website that is updated daily with the agenda and
assignments. Parents have access to this course website at any time to see what their
child is doing in class. Students who are absent should look at the course website to see
what they have missed for that day and prepare for the next day so they wont fall behind.
Submitting Assignments in Class
All assignments must be turned in at the beginning of class in the designated tray. Any
work submitted after Mr. Edwards has collected the tray will be considered late.
Submitting Assignments Electronically
All assignments submitted electronically must be submitted online before the specified
deadline. If the online submission box is not working, please email the assignment to Mr.
Edwards. If it cannot fit in an email, please bring the assignment on a USB to Mr.
Edwards at the beginning of class.
Make-Up Work
Mr. Edwards has a tray for make-up work, located in the Student Center. It is the
responsibility of the students to get their make up work out of the tray if they are absent.
Students must complete make-up work within 3 calendar days of returning to class in
order to receive credit. If a student knows in advance they will be out, they must make
arrangements well in advance.
For any missed tests, students will need to make arrangements to take the exam
outside of class time to avoid missing more instruction.
If a student is present when the work is assigned but absent on the due date, the
assignment is due the date they return.
If a student is absent when a long-term project is assigned but return before it is
due, they have the same deadline as everyone else.
If a student is involved in a group endeavor and is absent on the day of a
presentation, they will not receive credit but will be given an alternate individual
assignment.
If a student has extenuating circumstances, please make an appointment to discuss
their situation with Mr. Edwards

Late Work
All assignments turned in late can only be submitted for partial credit. Students must
contact Mr. Edwards to arrange a plan to turn in the late work. Work will be labeled M
(Missing) in the grade book until the student has contacted the teacher to see when they
can turn in the late work. Students are granted four late tokens for the year.
Returning Assignments
Once graded, all assignments will be placed in a designated folder for each student.
Students should check their folders daily and reflect on their graded work.
Class Discussions
Students are expected to participate every day during the class discussions. Students
should show courtesy and respect to the teacher and other students during discussions.
Cell Phones/Headphones
This is an A classroom. Cell phones and headphones are not allowed in the classroom,
unless for academic use. Review the Student Handbook for rules regarding cell phone
use and punishments.
Hall Passes
Students are allowed three hall passes each semester. In order to leave the classroom,
students must ask Mr. Edwards for permission to leave. Once permission is granted,
students must sign the log and take the hall pass with them. Students are not allowed to
leave class during the first and last ten minutes (ten-ten rule).
Class Procedures
The following things will not be tolerated during class, unless given permission by Mr.
Edwards:
1. Texting
2. Doing work for other classes
3. Reading non-related texts during academic learning
4. Sleeping
5. Distracting others with noise

Mr. Edwards will try to take care of all disciplinary action within the classroom.
However, bullying, harassment, and blatant disrespect will never be tolerated and will be
sent to the office for immediate disciplinary action. Mr. Edwards will notify all parents if
their child has acted in a way that would require a disciplinary referral.
Communication
Extra Help
Mr. Edwards would love to help students who need extra help. To stay after, please let
Mr. Edwards know at least a day in advance. He will come as early as 7:30 am and stay
as late as 4:00 pm. He will try his hardest to meet with every student who needs help.

Social Media
Mr. Edwards maintains several social media accounts in an effort to reach as many
students as possible with reminders, helpful links, etc. These are professional accounts,
not personal accounts. All interactions should be for academic use only. The links to the
class Twitter feed and Facebook page are listed below. These pages will be monitored,
and any inappropriate posts will be removed and reported for disciplinary action.
Students and parents are encouraged to follow Mr. Edwards on each of these accounts so
they can stay as informed as possible.

Remind 101
Mr. Edwards will send homework reminders whenever possible to students and parents
through a texting service called Remind 101. More information will be given on the
first day of class. This is a voluntary service that both students and parents can sign up
for if they would like extra reminders. However, students should not become dependent
upon this service. Even if a reminder is not sent, students are still responsible for turning
in all assignments on time.
Communication with Parents
Parent-teacher communication is integral to the success of the students. Please contact
him through the information listed on page 1 with any questions, comments, or concerns.
Mr. Edwards is available for conferences with parents, upon request.

The Classroom
The Student Center
The Student Center is a designated area in the classroom that is stocked with supplies for
use by students. Items like paper, construction paper, tissues, and hand sanitizer are free
for students to use and take. Items like pencils, pens, etc. can be borrowed by students for
the class period. Items like the pencil sharpener, stapler, tape dispenser, three-hole
punch, supplies kits, etc. can be used by students but must remain at the Student Center
unless told otherwise by Mr. Edwards.
The Class Library
Mr. Edwards maintains a class library and would love for students to check out books.
Reading is a great hobby! Please see Mr. Edwards if you would like to do so.
Mr. Edwards Space
Students should not go behind Mr. Edwards desk or touch the materials located in his
personal space unless given explicit permission from Mr. Edwards. All necessary
materials for students should be found in the Student Center. The microwave and
refrigerator are for teacher use only.
