INTRODUCTION
The Kite-maker is an excellent
short story written by Ruskin Bond, about
a kite-maker Mehmood and his thoughts.
Its more about the changing time and its
impact on the
socio-economic life of people.
It recounts how Mehmood the protagonist
is left behind & how he is outdone by
time.

SUMMARY
The story starts with Mehmoods
grandson Ali trying to fly a kite on a
street.
As he watches Ali struggle with his kite, a
deep sense of isolation has wrought a kind
of silence in the life of Mehmood.
He feels out of place and uprooted as
well.

Whole life Mahmoods passion has
been creating and flying kites.
He, had in the prime of his life been well
known throughout the city for his art.
But now a days the passion for flying kite
is gone.
Even the space for flying kite is almost
negligent.

Manhoods business was suffering
as the young generation did not like flying
kites. Instead they liked to see films more.
There was a time when the adults liked to
fly kites and they had great kite battles
also.
Manhood remembers those days when he
himself made grand kites for the Nawabs.

They were the dragon kites and the
musical kites.
In those days the kite makers were
patronized by the Nawabs.

SUMMARY
The only use of his fine
art is limitedly used to entertain his
little friend and grandson Ali.
Mehmood, for most of the time these
days, seeks shelter
and solace in memory.
The present for him is more of a kind of
nightmare.

Age and declining
years, miserable financial condition, life
rendered meaningless by changing
time, cold indifference meted out to him
by the present generation, finally,
silence Mehmood for good.
The story moves back and forth in time in
unison
with the shifting, contemplative moods of
Mehmood.
CHARACTER SKETCH
Mehmood the main character of the
story is a simple man who finds joy in
simple things in life like kites.
He is extremely passionate person and
values his art more than the materialistic
things in life like money.
Mehmood was like the banyan, his hands
gnarled and twisted like the roots of the
ancient tree.
He is sad to see the present scenerio and
the vast changes.

CONCLUSION
Justice is done to this
character through the employment of the
flash-back technique.
The death of the protagonist coincides
with the liberation of Alis kite that was
stuck in the banyan tree.
It seems both of them are set free from
earthly bondage,
as the kite suggestively vanishes into the
blue sky.
