How I made it in the tiresome journey of 28th BCS-

Preliminary Exam
Dear BCS Candidates ,
My heartiest "sympathy" to all you guys as you have stepped into one of the most tedious
roads towards success. About me, couple of days bac ! was a poor soul wondering about
what will happen after ".# years of hardwor , patience and unbearable uncertainty.
$ortunately, ! made it in "%th BCS and my position was &th in the 'olice merit list.
Before ! start, one thing ! want to clearly state that ! do not consider myself (ualified enough
to ")each" you how to do well in the BCS e*am. As your fellow traveller, ! am +ust sharing
my e*perience. !f you find these ,)ips- useful and use them to achieve much bigger success,
! will consider my efforts successful.
So let.s get started///
As you all now, BCS starts with 'reliminary e*am. !n my opinion, 'reliminary is the
toughest of all the e*ams a candidate face in the entire process. 0ou get only one hour to
answer 122 (uestions and the syllabus is as big as an ocean3 these two things combined mae
the preliminary e*am most challenging. !ronically, mars of preliminary e*am are not added
in the selection process3all you need to do is pass/
! followed the following strategies to pass the preliminary e*am 4both "%th and "5th67
'89:!;<S '89=!M!>A80 9?AMS7
)his is the first step every BCS candidate should tae3 they should collect the (uestionnaire
of BCS preliminary e*ams from12th3"5th BCS and solve them thoroughly. =ittle boolets
containing all the preliminary (uestions are found in >ilhet which should not cost more than
#2 taa. Before you start your preparation, collect it and solve all the (uestions. )his e*ercise
will give you a very good idea of what you will face in the real e*am. As they say in @uerilla
Aarfare handboos3"Bnowing your enemy is winning half the battle"3so appropriate for
BCS///
@9>98A= B>;A=9D@94Bangladesh and international6
!f you go to any "candidate.s crowd", you will see at least C2 percent of them are studying
@eneral Bnowledge craDily. )hey are trying to memoriDe anything and everything they have
at hand, including (uestions lie "Ahat toilet paper Bara ;bama uses".
Dear friends, please D; >;) spoil your time and energy lie this. @eneral Bnowledge does
not have any syllabus and no matter how much you study, you will never be able to ensure
full mars. Spend this e*tra time in Maths, Science or even Bangla, you will get better result
with less effort.
CA<)!;>7 ! did not say that you would not study @eneral Bnowledge at all. As your
preparation, tae one Big @eneral Bnowledge boo 4A+er Bishwo, >otun bishwo etc
whatever you feel comfortable6 and collect current affairs magaDine 4preferable 'rofessor.s6
every month. D; >;) try to memoriDe the entire boo, +ust study them for E23&# minutes a
day. )ry to remember things that you feel important 4for e*ample, "Ahat is the name of <S
president" or "Aho became champion in AC $ootball "2126.
D; >;), ! repeat, D; >;) spoil your time and energy trying to memoriDe unnecessary
information. Fave a good nowledge of what a normal person should now 4you will
understand what is ">ormal. once you go through the previous preliminary (uestions63you
will do +ust fine//
BA>@=A7
! passed both the preliminary e*ams with the help of Bangla. )o study Bangla, ! will
recommend E boos a6 A good preliminary Bangla guide 4'rofessorsG;racle6 b6 Soumitra
SheharHs BCS preliminary Bangla and c6 Bangla Sahittyer !tihash by Mahbubul AlamGFu(4!
forgot the name6 . All these boos are available in >ilhet. 0ou do not need to memoriDe
anything, +ust read them over and over so that you can recogniDe the correct answer from the
given choices. Do not bother much about grammar, Bangla grammar hardly comes in the
e*am. $or satisfaction, you can read Bagdhara, =ingo, Baro, Somash, Deshi3Bideshi
Shobdo, 93Bothay 'roash, 'ori:asha etc from the 5312 Bangla @rammar boo.
89M9MB98, %2 I (uestions in Bangla come from the literature part.
9>@=!SF7
>owadays 9nglish has " phases a6 @rammar and b6 =iterature. Juestions mostly come from
the grammar portion. !f you read the preliminary (uestions thoroughly, you will understand
the topics that are covered e.g voice, narration, sub+ect3verb agreement, phrasal verbs, idioms
and phrases etc. Study these topics from class 5312 and 1131" grammar te*tboo. ! used ,A
'assage to 9nglish =anguage- by SM Kair Fossain but any good grammar boo will do3no
need to buy that boo particularly. 0ou will also need a good preliminary guide for practice.
B9 AAA89, each and every preliminary guide is full of thousands of mistaes so do not trust
them with answers. See the (uestion , try to solve it and if you are confused, consult te*tboo
or a good 9nglish teacher. !nternet can be a great help too. Lust google the wordGsentence you
are confused with and you will see a lot of answersGsimilar problems.
$or =iterature (uestions ! thin 'rofessorHs Current Affairs is more than enough. But
sometimes they have wrong answers3so chec out any confusion with an 9nglish =iterature
studentGteacher. 0ou +ust need to now (uestions lie ,Aho wrote Macbeth- etc, no need to
be an 9nglish =iterature encyclopedia.
SC!9>C97
$or science, again you need a good preliminary science guide 4;racleGM'E6, SSC @eneral
Science boo and previous yearHs preliminary (uestions. =ie all other sub+ects, previous
preliminary (uestions will show you what to study.
MA)FS7
! +ust solved previous yearHs preliminary (uestions for my Math preparation. 0ou can use
SaifurHs MathG Class %Hs math boo for more practice. !f you understand all the Maths that
came in previous years (uestions, ! do not thin you will miss a single mar in maths. 0ou
should really try to get full mars in Maths by practicing because it will help you a lot to pass
the e*am than uncertain general nowledge (uestions. !nstead of studying hours after hours
of general nowledge, study maths. 0ou surely will carry almost perfect score in maths ,
which you cannot guarantee by studying general nowledge.
F;A @;;D !S @;;D 9>;<@FMMM
! always wondered how much mars would be enough to (ualify the preliminary e*am. )he
answer is3it depends on the (uestion. $or e*ample, in "%th BCS ! answered only #C and got
appro*imately &N.# after negative maring. ! thought it would not be enough but it was/ !n
"5th BCS , where (uestion was very easy, ! answered C1 and probably got NC. )here are
people who got N# didnHt (ualify in "5th BCS, and there are people who got &E but (ualified
in the "%th BCS e*am. So, there is no hard and fast rule. "%th and "5th BCS are two e*tremes
where previous one was very hard but later one was too easy. !n a standard (uestion, ! thin
N2 is good enough. But again, the more you get correct3the better.
SF;<=D ! @<9SS C;>$<S!>@ J<9S)!;>SMMMM
! recommend not to. $or every wrong answer they actually penaliDe you with 1.# mars31
mar for the wrong answer and 2.# from what you got correct. Ahen the (uestion is easy lie
the "5th BCS, it is better to answer (uestions that you are C2I sure but for tough (uestions
lie "%th BCS you should be as precise as possible. But if you see that you are not being able
to ensure even &23&# mars, it is better to tae a ris and answer (uestions that you are #2I

)his is one sub+ect where you can easily ensure 52P mars out of hundred. )here are always
one or two papers where the (uestions are unusualGout of patternGvery tough. $or e*ample, in
"Cth BCS the science (uestion was (uite tough as they ased to draw the circuit ,which is
totally une*pected for non3science graduates lie me. !n "%th BCS, Bangladesh "nd paper
was fully based on constitution which is very unfair to the non3law students. Ahen these
things happens, the only way to save yourself from complete disaster is to do really well in

$or mathematics, the first thing you should do is to solve the previous yearHs (uestion papers.
By doing this you will be able to understand what ind of math they as you to solve. $or last
" BCS e*ams they have ased to solve only # maths (uestions in " hours which was not very
tough. Fowever, if they as you to solve 12 (uestions within the same time, it will be tough

it is almost sure that you will get #2 out of #2. So, buy any guide 4'rofessorsG;racleGM'E6
and solve it from A to K. 0ou should buy the old ,'atigonit- boo of class 5312 and solve the
entire algebra part with e*amples given in that boo. 9*amples from the old te*t boo are
very important as they prepare you to solve confusing algebra (uestions in the most accepted

WARNING:IT IS A LENGTHY,IN-DEPTH ARTICLE.

Dear BCS candidates,

! am once again bac with my "9*perience3sharing" mission for the future candidates.)he
BCS e*amination process is such a lengthy one that there is a +oe among candidates3")hose
who have taen the BCS e*am need no other tormentor to torture them"/ !n this lengthy
process most of us gets confused simply by looing at the vast syllabus. As ! said earlier,! do
not consider myself (ualified enough to teach you anything new,! am here +ust to share my
e*perience so that new candidates can get some help.!t is not necessary to follow my
guidelines, however, you can give it a try.

;ay,enough dilly3dally,lets get started7

BAS!C @<!D9=!>97

Someone who is good at 9nglish has a great advantage over others. "22 mars in 9nglish is a
very big deal and people can tae upto #2 mars lead from others if sGhe has good command
in 9nglish. Fowever, one does not have to be Ailliam Shaespear to perform well. !f one can
write simple 9nglish without spelling and grammatical errors,it is more than enough to secure
good mars.

Ae now that out of "22 mars, only "# is grammar and the rest is free3hand writing 4essays,
precis, amplification, letterGapplication, translation etc6. ! had the opportunity to tal to some
of the very senior university teachers who chec BCS 9nglish scripts. Most of them told me
that they are ready to give very generous mars if a candidate writes simple 9nglish without
error.

Ahenever there is a silly spelling mistae of a grammatical error 4lie using "Fe" after a
female gender or mistaes in sub+ect3verb agreement6, it has really negative impact on mars.
!t is better to write simple but correct sentences than writing comple* sentences with
mistaes.

So, by "Fas a good command in 9nglish" ! mean "Someone who can write simple, correct
9nglish".

)o be a good writer you must read first. 8ead 9nglish comics, newspapers, whatever you feel
lie. ! read it in a boo which is very true7 ">obody became dumber by reading". !f you read
a lot, you will unnowingly find that writing correct 9nglish is not very tough.

Start with 9nglish >ewspapers, second3hand 9nglish novels found in >ilhet, Archie Comics
or whatever you feel lie. 8ead, read and read3 this is the only way through which your
subconscious mind will prepare a very strong 9nglish base for you. !f you read a lot, after
couple of months you will find that you are writing correct 9nglish automatically, your
subconscious mind will help you to write comple* yet correct sentences without any e*tra
effort.

As a BCS candidate you need to now what is going on around you, for which 9nglish
newspaper 4Daily StarG!ndependentGnew Age etc6 can be really helpful. $rom today onwards,
spend at least E2 minutes a day in reading. ! can guarantee that you will feel the change in
you after E2 days. )he number of unnown words in reading will be reduced dramatically
and it will be fun for you to read.

S)9'3"7 A8!)!>@

)o achieve the level of writing simple and correct 9nglish, you should start writing at least E
pages a day everyday. Select any topic and write E3# pages everyday.0ou can start with easy
topics lie "My family","Ahy ! want to +oin civil service" and then gradually write about
serious topics lie "Fow to fight terrorism", "9conomic development in Bangladesh" etc.
