Question 3

Sarah is standing 30 ft from a tree and she can see the top of the tree at a 35 angle of
elevation. Sarahs height is 5 ft from the ground. Find the height of the tree to the
nearest foot.

35
30 feet

Solution :

1) The angle of elevation of the top of the tree from Sarahs eye is 35.
2) From the angle of elevation, we used the right triangle trigonometry to find the
height of the tree.
3) By using tangent ratio :
tan =

Let the opposite side be x.
tan 35 =

= 30 ft x (tan 35 )
= 21 ft

4) The value of is added with the height of Sarah which is 5 feet.
= 21 ft
Sarahs height = 5 ft
The height of the tree is :
21 ft + 5 ft = 26 feet.
5) The value must be in nearest foot , thus the height of the tree is 30 feet.

30 ft
35
5 ft

Question 4

A hiker has to measure the height of a cliff before he climbs it. He is standing on the
ground 11 metres from the base of the cliff and looking at the top of the cliff. The angle
of elevation of the top of the cliff from his eye is 63 and his height is 1.6 metres. Can
you help the hiker to measure the height of the cliff?

Solution:
1) The angle of elevation of the top of the cliff from the Hikers eye is 63.
2) From the angle of elevation, we used the right triangle trigonometry to find the
height of the cliff.
3) By using tangent ratio :
tan =

Let the opposite side be x.
tan 63 =

= 11 m x (tan 63 )
= 21.6 m

4) The value of is added with the height of the hiker which is 1.6 metres.
= 2.6 metres
Hikers height = 1.6 metres
The height of the cliff is :
21.6 m + 1.6 m = 23.2 metres.

11 m
63
1.6 m
