MAY 5, 1976 RUBY ANNIVERSARY MAY 5, 2016
UPCOMING MEETING Hello friends! It is once again time to begin a new biennium. I attended the Leadership Conference in June and spent a day with chapter presidents from all across Mississippi. It was a great day meeting new people and I learned so much about our organization. It is my honor to lead you all these next two years as your president. These summer months have been busy with preparations. Officers have met, plans have been made, and we are ready to go! Hope you are too! Donna Hopper Celebration! As you can see in the above banner, we have a celebration ahead of us. In 1976 Alpha Chapter of Columbus, Mississippi (which had been organized May 8, 1938) had grown in membership and the executive board recommended that it divide into three chapters Alpha Iota of West Point, Alpha Kappa of Starkville and Mississippi State, and Alpha of Columbus. Our charter is dated May 5, 1976. So our biennium will end with the Ruby Anniversary of Alpha Kappa Chapter. More will be shared over the next two years as we glance back at our past on the way to our future. Nominations It is also time to nominate new members!
Eligibility for Membership per DKG guidelines: Membership is by invitation only and considered a prestigious honor with a variety of benefits and privileges. Selection is based on professional qualification, leadership potential and personal qualities. Those who accept the invitation to join commit to being active participants in the life of the organization and pay nominal annual membership dues. Educators considered for membership are women who 1) live in one of the 18 countries where DKG is established. 2) are currently employed as a professional educator, OR are a self-employed educator, such as a private music teacher, OR retired from an educator position.
You will notice that the guidelines are a bit more relaxed than in the past. Gone are time limitations (5 years since beginning to teach or within 5 years since retirement).
If you know an educator you would like to nominate, please complete the included form. Then you may either mail
the form to Sandy Maynard (by August 22): 502 N. Montgomery St. Starkville, MS 39759
OR email or phone (by August 22) the nominees name to Sandy Maynard at: stmayn@bellsouth.net or 662.418.4832. THEN be sure to bring the completed form to the first meeting at Harveys and turn it in to Sandy. ALPHA KAPPA CHAPTER | Issue #14.1.1 2
Ribbon for pins Any members who would like to purchase a red ribbon on which to pin your DKG pin/s, you will be able to do so at the first meeting at Harveys. Gamma Pi Chapter of Virginia Beach, VA, sells these for $18 each ($16 with an order of more than 5). They are magnetic thus no pins that will pick your clothing. Also, these are personalized with your name, Alpha Kappa Chapter and Zeta State MS.
Recognition Official DKG jewelry (pins or charms) will be available for purchase at our first meeting at Harveys Many members have a membership anniversary this year and we plan to recognize those as a part of our recommitment ceremony which will take place in conjunction with our initiation at the second meeting. It is not required but would be a nice part of the ceremony to receive your appropriate membership pin. The year member pins are $28 each.
The yearbook is quite a valuable tool; it contains everything we need to know about our organization and very specific info about our chapter. It helps us to remember names to faces and it provides phone numbers, addresses, and email addresses for all our members. It also is a necessary tool to use during our meetings. PLEASE do remember to bring your yearbook with you to each meeting. This year, the yearbook will be given out at the FIRST meeting rather than initiation! But waithow will we make sure all personal info is correct??? Easy, email any changes or corrections from the last yearbook to April Dill: adill@starkville.k12.ms.us. Please do this as soon as possible as she will be printing soon! For Future Newsletters Send email to: donnahopper@gmail.com
with the funny happenings or things your students say in your classrooms! with any classroom units/projects/activities that really worked well which you would like to share. We are going to have Teacher Show and Tell time!
