2 Analysing Motion
Graphs
Motion Graphs
1. There are two main types of
linear motion graphs:
(a) displacement-time
(b) velocity-time
Displacement-Time Graph
We can analyze the velocity of an object by
plotting a graph of displacement against time.
Example:
A student walks at a constant velocity
from position A to reach position B in
200 s. He rests for 100 s at position
B and then walks back to position A
using the same straight path. He
reaches position A after 200 s.
The Graph Below Shows The Change In
The Distance And Direction With Time Of
The Student.
The various displacement-time graphs
are shown as follows;
Velocity-Time Graph
Example
A car starts from rest and accelerates for
20 s until it reaches a velocity of 60 m s-1.
The driver maintains this velocity for 20
seconds. The velocity of the car is then
gradually reduced until it stops at t = 60 s.
