(KET-sal-ko-ATL), who died 300 years earlier. Cortes was sent from Spain on
a journey with one purpose: to find gold. The king of the Aztecs was
Montezumo 1480?-1520), and he didnt think this was Quetzalcoatl, but
some stranger. He was very worried that this man in iron and riding a horse
was in Mexico for no good. He was probably right. Cortes and his Spanish
men marched from town to town, killing townspeople and destroying the
will of the population. Once, in a town called Cholulu, Cortes asked the
headmen to come to the town square to negotiate a deal. When the
hundreds of them came with no weapons, Cortes and his small army killed
each and every one of the Cholulu men with cannons and crossbows. The
Spanish moved from city to city, doing the same thing that they did in
Cholulu until the made it to the capital, Mexico City. The Aztec empire was
destroyed and the Spanish controlled nearly everything.
