Lets Be Friends: What is Friendship?

Background

1. -Title: What is Friendship?
-Subject Area: Social Studies
-Grade Level: 1
st
/2
nd
grade
-Length: 30 minutes

2. Wholeness: Friendship is a relation of mutual affection between two or more
people.

3. SCI Wholeness: The nature of life is to grow.

4. Main Points:
-Friends come in all different shapes, sizes, colors, and from different places
- Friends are important because they are someone you can share fun times with
- A friends shares, listens, helps, plays, and accepts you.

5. Objectives:
-The students will verbally brainstorm qualities of friendship
- The students will identify the qualities of friendship from presented scenarios
- The students will understand friends come in all different shapes, sizes, colors,
and from different places
-The students will begin to identify similarities and differences between friends
-The students will begin to answer the question What is friendship?

6. National or Iowa Standards:
Iowa Core
- Understand that people often choose to dress, talk, and act like their friends.

National Standards for Social Studies:
-Learners will understand that individualsshare common elements and also
have unique characteristics

7. Approach: The dominant teaching approach I will use is discussion. I choose this
method because I want to have a brainstorming session on the meaning of
friendship. This is to start evaluating how much students know about them theme
of friendship.

8. Materials: -Butcher Paper or White Board
-Markers -Interest Search Worksheet -Pencils

9. Differentiation: If students are shy or not responsive to the brainstorming session,
I will them give them different scenarios and ask does the scenario seem like a
good friendship. I could also ask the students to identify the qualities each
character in the scenario posses. After going through the lesson if some students,
especially ELL, still dont understand the concept, Ill ask one of their peers to
explain the concept in their own words. Another option to help an ELL learner is
have a student role play a couple actions in their seat of what friendship looks
like.

Lesson Introduction

10. Review: This is the first lesson, so no concepts will be reviewed.

11. Introductory Focus: The students will be asked to raise their hand if they have
ever had a friend.

Lesson Development

12. Procedures:
!Brainstorm with students on the white board or butcher paper What is a
friend? This includes qualities, attributes, characteristics, examples, etc.
!As students are sharing their answers, they will be able to observe them being
categorized on the board.
!Assuming student have only talked about their peers being friends students will
be asked, is friendship only between two people? And what other forms of
friendship are there?
!Students will be charged to make new friends through out the month and one
way to start is by finding common interest
!Students will work on Interest Search Worksheet
!Discuss results: Did you find someone with similar interest? Anyone with
different interest? Some students will be asked to share in front of the class.

Lesson Ending
13. Closure:
!As a class students will come up with a FRIENDS Poem, to summarize the
meaning of friendship.
!Review with students there are many different types of friends- students will be
asked about types, characteristics, and examples
! Review SCI point: The nature of life is to grow. Ask students how the SCI
point relates to friendship. General Idea: As we grow older our friends may
change, but how a friendship is will still be the same.
