WHAT IS FACTORING?
The process of finding the factors of an
expression is called factoring, which
is the reverse process of multiplication.
A prime number is a number greater than
1 which has only two positive factors: 1 and
itself.
Factoring Perfect Square
Trinomial
Perfect square trinomial is the result of
squaring a binomial.
A perfect square trinomial has first and last
terms which are perfect squares and a
middle term which is twice the product of
the square root of first and last terms.
@GEOMATHRIX
EXAMPLE :
4
2
+12 +9 = ( 2 +3 )
2

The square root of 4 and 9 is 2 and 3. And
when you times 2 and 3 is 6 multiplied by
2, the answer is 12. Therefore 12 is the
Middle term.

42 +49 = (3 7)

Factoring Difference of
Two Squares

2

2
= (x+y) ( x y)
To Factor difference of two squares, try to find
the square root of the terms given. Then if you
want to check, multiply the first terms and the
second terms.
Factoring Difference of Two Squares is same
as Conjugates. It has same term but different
signs.
@GEOMATHRIX
EXAMPLE :
49
2
25 = 7 +5 7 5
The square root of 49 is 7 and the square root of 25 is 5. To
check if it is correct, multiply their first terms and Last
terms. 7x times 7x is 49

2
. 5 5 25 49

25.

Factoring General
Trinomials
It is same with Factoring Product of two
Binomials.
Example:

2
+ 5x 14
( x + 7 ) ( x 2 )

You have to know first which is the sum and the product.
The sum is the 5x and the product is the -14. You have to
find a number with sum of 5 and product of -14. In this
case 7 and-2 are the factors. Cause 7 2 is 5 (its sum)
and 7 times -2 is -14. ( the product) .
@GEOMATHRIX
Another way of solving Factoring
General Trinomials:
2
2
5x 3

-6 When you multiply 2 and -3 the
answer -6. Now you have to find a number with
sum of -5 since -6 is the product. The factors are -6
and x.

2
2
6 + 3
2x( x 3) + 1 (x 3 ) = Simplifying the terms.
(x 3 ) ( 2x +1)

Take the similar terms which is (x 3) and take the
other terms which is 2x and 1. Then your answer
will be (x 3) (2x + 1).

@GEOMATHRIX
EXAMPLE :

2
11 +30 = x 5 x 6

2
3 28 = 7 +4
4
2
16x+15 = (2x 5) (2x 3)
8
2
+ 2x 3 = (4x + 3) (2x 1)

2
- 13x 48 = (x 16 ) ( x + 3)

Factoring Square of
Trinomial
Example:
16
2
+9
2
+25 24ab+40a 30b
First re-arrange the terms.
16
2
24ab +9
2
+40 a 30b +25
Then simplify the terms.
(4a 3b)
2
+ 10 (4a 3b)
2
+25
Let x be = (4a 3b)
2

Then take the other Factors.

2
+10x+25
Then simplify.
(x+5)
2

(4a 3b +5 )

@GEOMATHRIX
EXAMPLE :
9
2
+ 36
2
+16 + 36ab 24a 48b
9
2
+ 36ab + 36
2
24a 48b + 16
9(
2
+4ab+4
2
) 24 (a+2b) +16
9 (a + 2b)
2
24 (a +2b) + 16
Let x be = a + 2b
9
2
24 +16
(3x 4 )
2

[ 3x (a + 2b) 4 ]
2

( 3a + 6b 4 )

2
12a 36b +9
4 (
2
+ 6ab + 9
2
) 12 (a + 3b) + 9
2 (a + 3b) 12 (a+3b) + 9
Let x be = a + 3b
( 2
2

( 2x + 3)
