School Library Media Center Philosophy/Mission Statement

Wrens Elementary School Mission Statement: Wrens Elementary provides a

supportive, learning environment where students can become productive, thinking
citizens in our changing world.

This mission statement is currently our school mission statement which was developed
about 8 years ago as part of a SACS review. Each morning during our morning
announcements, the students recite the mission statement and our school pledge. The
pledge states: I believe in myself, and will do my best to be responsible and respectful
because everything I do today will affect my tomorrow. Both the pledge and the
mission statement of the school are carried out within the media center as well.
As stated in this mission statement, I do feel that a media center should be a supportive
learning environment. But, I also believe that more should be added to this statement
that reflects the safety of the environment as well as the technology being taught. It
should also include the staff and community in order to reflect a 21st century learning
environment. According to Johnson (2013), a good mission statement is the driving
force for all other plans implemented in the media center.
Therefore, in order to reflect those changes, the mission statement would read as
follows:
Wrens Elementary Library / Media Center provides a safe, supportive learning
environment which will promote the love of reading and information through
independent activities and collaboration which utilizes print and digital media.
Implementation of this mission is provided by:
supplying print and digital resources that support diverse perspectives.
collaboration with faculty, staff and administration.
prepared lessons that foster appreciation of information and literature.
an environment in which growth is encouraged.
extending community involvement and outreach.
