Room C-118

Welcome to lower elementary in room C-118! We are very excited to be your childs
teachers this year. It is our goal to make the classroom a safe environment where students
discover the world around them through engaging exploration, while developing their own
independence and a sense of community. I ask that you take some time and review some of the
classroom expectations. Please sign and return the bottom portion of the sheet, after reviewing
the form. Thank you in advance for all of your cooperation, assistance, and most of all allowing
us to work with your child.

Thank You, Ms. Ashford & Mrs. Frenchie
2014-2015

Classroom Expectations

Work Plans- For the 2014-2015 school year students will have individual work plans. A work
plan is a form used to document lessons that are completed by the student in class. Lessons on
the work plan will be completed during the work cycle portion of each day. Work plans will be
sent home weekly. I ask that you review your childs work plan, sign and return.

Math Fact Test According to the Common Core Standards by the completion of first grade
students must be able to recall basic addition and subtraction facts (0 9). To aid each student
in this process, students will be required to practice, study, and then take a test on each math
fact. The fact test will consist of twelve number sentences in which the student will have one
minute to complete. After administration of the fact test, students will be given a verbal recall of
facts immediately following the one-minute written fact test. Students will continue to take
the same fact test until all facts are mastered.

Homework Each night all students will have the following homework assignments:
Nightly Reading with Reading Log All students will be responsible for reading a
piece of literature of any type, for at least 20 minutes. Each student will be provided
with a reading log in which a parent or guardian must record their childs reading
activity. After reading, students will also be responsible for writing a 2 to 4 sentence
summary about what they have read. Sentence 1 should state whether they liked
the book or not. Sentences 2-4 should explain why. (This portion of homework
should be recorded in your childs homework reading log notebook.)
Reading Group Book Students will be responsible for reading their reading group
book to an adult, as fast and fluent as they can. After reading the text, students will
be required to complete an activity in their reading group notebook. Note: Student
should return reading group book the following school day. Loss of guided reading
books will result in a fine and lost of field trip /field day participation privilege(s).
Word List Students will be given a new list of five to ten words, at the beginning of
each week. Students will be required to practice reading, writing/spelling, and using
words in conversations/story writing. Students will be quizzed, on their list of
words, at the end of each week. Words that are not mastered will be repeated the

following week. (This portion of homework should be recorded in your childs
homework notebook.)
Monthly Homework Calendar
o The questions on the calendar(s) may or may not correlate with the content
presented in the class, on that day; however, the content will be covered
throughout the year. Please keep in mind that the class is combined with
first and second graders; therefore, the pre-made teacher resource
homework calendar may contain questions too easy or too hard for the
student. (This portion of homework should be recorded in your childs
homework notebook.)
(Homework will begin by the second full week of school.)

Classroom Volunteers Volunteers are welcome. It is essential that our students understand
and believe that it is okay to be smart, know how to read, and be able to set a great example. In
order for these objectives to thrive, we need your help. If you are interested in volunteering,
please fill out a Rock Hill School District Three Volunteer form, on the district website. Your time
and support will be appreciated each school day after the third full week of school.

Snacks Students can bring a healthy snack from home. Students will be allowed to eat
their snack, during afternoon work cycle. However, snack will only be available if it is
provided by parents. Please be sure that your childs name is written on his/her snack.
Please refrain from sending cookies, candy, or other sugary foods for snack.

Morning/Afternoon Work Cycle Work cycle is a time in which students practice content
material taught during individual, small group, or whole group lessons/activities. Work cycle
time is designed to be accomplished in a peaceful, respectful, calm, and quiet environment.
Therefore, parents are encouraged to remind their child, daily, of their expected conduct
and behavior in the classroom. Please understand that if students fail to adhere to their
responsibilities, in terms of work and behavior, consequences will follow. Work practiced
during work cycle periods should be done by an individual student with minimum teacher
assistance. If students need assistance, assistance will be provided. Students will not be
expected to practice any material that has not been introduced. Please be mindful that the
same material can and will repeat in many different formats.

Classroom Restroom Breaks Students will be able to go to the restroom, when needed.
Students will be responsible for taking care of their restroom needs and then returning to
their work. If assistance is needed, assistance will be provided. Please understand that
having an open classroom restroom break is a privilege. If students choose to take
advantage of this privilege by playing or involving themselves in any inappropriate activities,
consequences will follow.

Nurse Visits Students will be able to visit the nurse, when needed. Students who are
severely ill will be monitored and escorted to the nurses office. Parents will be contacted
under the nurses discretion. Please understand that the health of our students is very
important. However, students will be encouraged to not take advantage of visiting the nurse
in order to remove themselves from classroom activities. If any problems occur concerning
nurse visits, parents will be contacted.

Cafeteria Etiquette - Lunch time is a very important portion of the school day. In order to
aid students in eating their meal, students will be asked to eat silently for the first five
minutes of the entire class lunch time. By doing this, students will less likely be hungry

directly after the lunch hour. If students fail to follow this requirement, consequences will
follow.

Classroom Rights:
1. Listen to your teachers
2. Respect your friends and yourself
3. Take care of your classroom materials
4. Keep a happy and peaceful classroom

We expect these standards to be followed by every student inside the classroom, on
school grounds, and on class field trips. These standards will be reviewed often and appropriate
behavior will be emphasized through positive reinforcement and praise throughout the school
year. However, if a student should disregard any one of the standards, the following
consequences will be activated:
Classroom/School Wide Consequences:
1. Verbal Warning
2. Time on the rug/Watching Chair
3. Silent lunch
4. Loss of free play during recess (number of minutes determined by
seriousness of infraction)
5. Parent contact (Phone Call or Note Sent Home)
6. Referral to the principal
Note: Please refer to the school wide discipline plan in your Parent-Student handbook.

Take Home Folder - The folder will be used to house important documents such as:
student behavior log, homework/homework notebook, newsletter, notes to parents,
and school notifications. Folders will be sent home daily (except Friday). Parents will be
encouraged to look through their childs folder, nightly.

Newsletters - Newsletters will be sent electronically, weekly.

Books Sent Home - Books that are sent home are expected to be returned in a timely
matter; however, lost books must be paid for before participating in any field trips.

Monthly Behavior Chart - Behavior Charts will be placed in your childs folder and sent
home at the beginning of each month. Parents are required to initial and return
behavior log daily. Behavior charts are suggested to remain in your childs folder.

Birthday Celebrations - Students in C 118 would like to help all of their peers celebrate
their birthday. I encourage parents to schedule birthday celebrations with me in
advance. If possible, all celebrations are preferred to take place toward the afternoon
school hours, on Friday.
