ON PREVENTION OF DIAPER DERMATITIS Quasy- Experimental study in Neonatal Ward Dr. Soetomo Hospital By : Maria Anita Yusiana Diaper Dermatitis is a cutaneus inflammation in areas covered with diaper most commonly suffered by babies or children. This abnormality generally results from a number of factors, such as physical (clothes and diapers), chemical (those containing in urine and feces), enzymatic (enzymatically-reacting) chemical feces in diaper. This inflammation can be prevented by cleaning diaper-covered areas throughly with clean water after the baby urinating or defecating. The entire areas, including skil-folds, are then dried, and before new diaper is put on, baby oil should be applied first. The application of abby oil is intended to prevent ammoniac attachtement to the skin and to easy the removal of meconium. This was quasy-experimental study. Samples involved were 20 patients hospitalized at Neonatal Ward, Dr Soetomo Hospital, Surabaya. Data were taken between 24 November and 24 December 2004 from the sample using purposive sampling. Based on statistical test using Mann Whitney U Test, it was found that treatment using baby oil was effective in preventing diaper dermatitis in neonates with significance level of p=0,00 (p0,05). This indicated significant influence of perianal treatment using baby oil on the prevention of diaper dermatitis. It was apparent that the use of baby oil could prevent this tipe of dermatitis. The sugestion that cause by this riset is a bout the baby oil should be countinuosly used to the night society and after diaper is wet diaper should be immediately removed after the baby is urinating or defecating.
