Objective
As a result of the lesson, students will be able to:
The student will be able to use the process of carrying when performing addition
problems.
The student will be able to explain and compute given math equations.

Ziploc bags with math equations
Suggested Time: 1-2 weeks of class for time allotted for Math. (60 minutes)

Lesson
1. Gather class attention by saying, Good Morning. Today is ____. Students respond with
the day of the week. We are ____. Student responds _All Stars All Stars_. We act like it
and we mean it. Students respond.
2. Have students complete a Pre-assessment to see their level of knowledge prior to
beginning the section of regrouping addition.
3. Discuss the concept of regrouping in addition. Also, discuss place value to find out what
the students may have retained form previous lesson. Demonstrate the concept by
showing a short PowerPoint slide about regrouping. Have students take notes in their
journals. They will make a foldable in their journal with definition of regrouping and
examples of math equations with step-by-step of how to carry a number.
4. After the PowerPoint, continue discussing regrouping. Have students give feedback by
asking questions. What is regrouping? Where is the ones place value? Where are the tens
place value?
5. Have students come to the Smart Board and complete some addition math regrouping
equations, label, and explain step-by-step. Then ask students how this math concept will
play a role in your life.
6. Students will demonstrate regrouping with manipulative.
7. Divide students into groups of 2-3 students and each group gets a set of blocks, a zip lock
bag with laminated note cards with math problems, paper and pencil.
8. The students will have red blocks for ones and green blocks for tens. Each person in the
group will attempt to solve the equation; if correct they will demonstrate how they
received the answer. If wrong teacher will have students go back through the steps.
9. Also, students are to use their notes to guide them through the activity.
10. Have students complete all the cards.
11. Stop the activity and have students complete some of the problems at the Smart Board
and explain the steps.
12. Give students an assessment independently to show how much information they have
retained.
