Introduction to Research & Other Scholarly Activities (UCRS 3150)

Purpose - The purpose of this course is to prepare the class for research and scholarly activity. Information on
planning, organizing, collecting and analyzing data, preparing research papers, and presenting research findings will
be provided. Additionally, information regarding preparation for graduate education and the academy will be
presented.

Grading - Course grade (1000 points) will be based on participation and attendance/promptness (250 points) and
assignments (750 points).

If you do not title the file in this fashion, points will be deducted from your grade; if you do not submit

Find five articles on your own research. Write up an annotated bibliography for each article.
3. Reflection Paper (50 pts.) due June 27
Please write one short, single page paper on both publications On Being a Scientist and The History, Purpose, and
Future of Instruction in the Responsible Conduct of Research. Both are available online (click here for online
versions). Reflection papers are often about personal reactions and thoughts. Remember that the rules of writing
apply to papers about your thoughts and feelings. Although you are writing about a personal experience, this does
not allow you to use a free-form of writing. Focus your feelings, be organized, and develop observations and
feelings. Observations and feelings are an essential component of a reflection paper; however, in order for these
components to be properly conveyed, they must be developed. Identify specific aspects or components of the
situation that has been observed. One way to do this is by asking basic questions: who, what, when, where, why,
and how.

5. Scholarship and Graduate School Applications (100 pts.) due July 18
See example online. Using the information provided in the packet (checklist), please develop an annotated list of
five prospective schools and five prospective scholarships (or fellowships). Answer the following questions about
each school and/or scholarship:
1. Why this school/scholarship?
2. Who would you like to work with at this school, why, and in which department (grad app)?
3. When is the application due?
4. How much is the fee and is there a waiver?
5. Is there a second application for the department (in addition to the one for the graduate school)?
6. Other items as appropriate.
6. Grant Proposals (50 pts.) due July 25 (Personal Statement draft also due)
Please develop an annotated list of three field specific grants. Answer the following questions:
1. Why is the grant appropriate for you?
2. When is the grant due, and what years does it cover?
3. How much is the grant and is it tuition, fees, stipend, or all?
